Trying to keep a Generac diesel generator running

Hi, everyone: I have a Generac diesel generator Series NP-65D in my 1999 Gulfstream diesel pusher. The problem...it starts fine but will only continue to run as long as I keep the pre-heat button pushed in. When I let it go, the generator stops. Any thoughts?

No answer will be laughed at!

Sounds like a o/p, temp sensor or control board they are likely over ridden as long as the preheat is activated. Just a guess if you can get to them unhook the temp and o/p sensor and see what happends.
