TV Location/Recliners

Looking at used motorhomes and it appears it is difficult to find one with center section tv and recliners besides the driver/passenger one. Why is this? We don't need two couches and don't want to look up and to the front to watch TV. Is it difficult to replace couches with recliners (securing to floor?) and to linstall a mid section TV? Understand it is difficult to find used ones exactly as we want. Thanks,

The front location ( above drivers seat ) TV location, is a hold over from early coaches with no slides. Cross coach TV/ recliner, viewing area on single slide coaches , is limited by walkway space when someone is reclined, so not popular. The cross coach viewing came in with coaches with opposing living area slides , so that recliners can be used and still have a walk way. Newer ( $$$$) coaches.
Most couches will have seat belts so securing a recliner would not be difficult, because there will be a bolt down spot already in the floor, but seat belts should not be used with the recliners.

When looking to buy our second motorhome, location of the tv was high on the list of things we wanted. We ended up with a Winnebago Voyage 38J, The Adventurer also has a 38J model, but I think they stopped making the 38J in about 2008. Another model we found with the tv across from the couch or recliners were the Forrest River 378. Winnebago also makes similar floorplans in some of their diesel pushers.

Residential recliners ; with sections of wooden frame work and most with removable backs ( for ease of transport) are simply not strong enough, to offer any kind of support/protection, for an occupant, in the event of an accident.

One of the reasons we picked our MH is because the TV is curbside and across from optional dual recliners. Hated watching TV sideways and looking up.

Changing the location of a TV & replacing couches with recliners is one of the most popular upgrades members do with their older RV's. There are lots of threads from members who've moved the TV alone. If you're at all handy with running wires & installing/hooking up TV systems, it'll be a snap. You can save a lot of money buying an older (properly maintained) RV & then you can put the money you saved in to a nice AV set up & furniture.

Our Gulf Stream has a counter space at the rear of the living area. It's large enough to set a 42" LCD. Swivel the front seats and we're watching tv head on at eye level. No wires if you use:

I would definitely recommend checking this out. It was the inspiration for us to do the same.

Even in new motorhomes I am surprised at how poorly placed the televisions are for viewing in most floor plans. Typically there are opposing couches or couch and love seat with the tv sideways further down which would require one to completely turn ones head sidways to watch. Makes absolutely no sense.

I do like the newer floor plans that offer the tv at a angle where you can see it without turning your head or as someone else pointed out a few floorplans, even on older ones, have the tv mounted either across from one couch or dinette facing the other couch on a lift in a similar position.

We like our Georgetown 378 XL. It has the opposing TV couch floor plan. We were able to remove the 40" tv, after it went out, and replaced with a 43" Vizio smart TV after removing the trim around the old TV.

Our Phaeton has dual recliners. Factory installed but we were willing to change a couch into recliners if needed. We really like them.

A TV opposite the recliners was high on the wish list. The Phaeton does not have this. Rather it has a 37" TV over the dash, and a 32" TV mounted mid coach. While we were also willing to do a position modification, first we wanted to see how the existing setup worked for us. It works very well, we have learned. We move one of the recliners to the middle of the living area facing the above dash TV, the other stays to the drivers side but is at a good angle for viewing. We seldom use the mid TV. Usually only if sitting at the dining table facing rearward.

So, in summary, we don't think modifications needed. YMMV, but I wanted to share a recommendation to try a stock setup for awhile before making modifications.

Another option. Replaced the couch with 2, wall hugging, swivel recliners that are metal framed.

One of the best upgrades we made.
