Unmounted spare tire

I have a 2000 Bounder diesel has anyone tried or carried an unmounted spare tire in the compartment used to access the radiator in the rear. Of course it would have to be secured in the compartment but with out a rim I would think you should have enough air flow any comments or ideas on this subject. ( you know some day I hope to be able to answer some of these questions)

It would reduce the net-free-area somewhat. Say, to the tune of of greater than 50%.
A 22.5" tyre consumes 5.25 sq. ft. of surface area w/o any rim. That's a lot of space! Not to mention the air turbulence now induced by the obstruction.

>>Most would opt to carry in the Toad.
