Updating Dash GPS

I see many of the newer motorhomes are coming with in-dash GPS units. Do you get updates over the air, by disk, or do the units not get updated? Just curious as we are looking at moving to a different rig in the future.

Those with embedded dashboard installed Rand McNally devices have an SD card slot. You take the SD card to internet connected computer and log into their network using their Dock program.

Mine is a Pioneer unit. The update is purchased and sent to me via a SD card. The card fits into a slot in the dash unit.

Thanks for your responses. I have a Lincoln MKC and the updates to the GPS is done at the same time they update the software, or so I'm told. I wasn't sure how they handled the built in RV GPS units.

Just curious...I've never had any experience with an on-board unit. The SD upgrade makes sense for keeping up to date maps. However, I like to have the mapping software on my laptop so I can create my own route and avoid the point A to Point B guidance that most, if not all, GPS's provide. I've read many "A to B" complaints. Do the on-board units allow you to create or alter the route on the go (not while driving of course :}) or do you have to go with that flow?
Just curious, as we are seeing a GPS installed on many things these days...maybe someday even our lawnmowers will have one...JK. I expect to encounter an in dash unit one day and I'm always questing for knowledge.

Hi TnT612,
My Pioneer in dash unit allows 6 different routes from point A to B. If that is not enough, all I do is add a way point in the area I want to go through. The computer does the rest and usually does it quite well.
