Upright Vacuum Cleaner?

DW wants a new upright vacuum cleaner to replace the handheld. We've got lot of carpet. We're not full timers but will get a lot of dirt on 4-mth trip this summer to Alaska. Easy to use & store. What have you had the best success with? What would you buy? Thanks.

We use the "Shark" cordless. You can buy it at Wall Mart. It runs for several days w/o recharging and does a great job of picking up dirt from carpets and hard surface floors. Its light weight and stores in a corner. The DW liked it so much we got one for the house also. The handheld doesn't get used much anymore.

I bought a Dyson. It's amazing at the amount of Chiuahua hair it picks up every 3-4 days. They're spendy but well worth the money

My wife recently bought a Dirt Devil upright at a Walmart . (The Walmart was conveniently located right next to the parking lot where we overnighted.)
The vacuum has a handle that folds down, a beater bar, accessories, and a hose. Works good, around $50.
There is also have a less expensive model, NO HOSE. (Read the info on the boxes at Walmart, or do a search on the web.)

We use an Orec in our coach. It's small, compact and has a rotating brush.

I vote for the Dirt Devil. Under $50 and it folds into a nice small package. The thing is only 12 inches wide so it gets into the small spots around the front seats of out gasser. The hose gets everything else.

............Dirt Devil from WalMart as well, no hose model, have a small handheld for stairway. One of the good things about the DD is a long cord, as well as storing under the bed, very convient. A very powerful suction, does a great job for the $$$.

Consumer reports rates these. I have a 15 year old Dirt Devil that they rated well at the time, and it's still doing well after fairly heavy use in my home. It is quite noisy, so I wear ear protection when using it.
