You should send your VIN to Cummins to let them tell you what protocol the engine uses. Either J1939 (newer) or J1708 (older). Your model year is on the newer side of the transition from one to the other, but could be either. Make sure Cummins double checks because they guessed wrong on my 2002.

The nine pin round Deutsch connector was used on both protocols. Some vehicles support both at the same time...

Or, buy a scan tool that does both.

FYI, the ScanGauge D has both the 6-pin J1708 and the 9-pin J1939 plugs

ScanGuage is popular if you want something to monitor the engine while driving. I don't know what those cost, but I assume they are more expensive than a handheld code reader.

Diesel pushers do not use OBD connections, check it out. OP has a DP.
