For a leak, removing the unit is not necessarily necessary. Some silicone type goop should seal things up nicely with a money outlay of around ten bucks.

That gasket is a convenience, not a must have.

I would vote for the tighten it up first plan. No need to get up on the roof for that? Don't get crazy though. Over tightening can cause more trouble. Snug is good!

mobile tech vs diy

We have had our motorhome for about 8 months now and lots of repairs and such. We are not diy, except for minor things such as changing bulbs, fuses and such, we call a mobile tech to get it done right the first time. It costs us a lot of cash, but what the heck, this rig cost a fortune too. It has ended up costing more than the house we had, but traveling with our pets, seeing new things, so big deal if I spend the money, that is what we were saving it for all these years. The renovations have cost us the most, new flooring, tv's, and such.

I see it this way...the things I can fix, I do fix, the things I can't do myself I pay others. The things I won't take on are electrical, mechanical, and plumbing...other than that I am pretty good... On a serious note to a serious topic, if I can see it done the first time, I am usually good-to-go the next time around.

I don't know what's involved in a HVAC gasket change, but if it involves getting on the roof, and removing stuff... I would pay someone else the $200.00 or so bucks...of course we are all speaking of the reputable service center or mobile tech who can and will take responsibility for THEIR work.
