When I got my Private Pilots license many years ago... I questioned the checklists and their thoroughness.

Now... I do just about everything by checklist. I actually have a clipboard with my check list and a pen and physically check off: Neutral, Park Brake off, Key in position 1, Fuse switches = off, along with about 50 other "ready to roll" items on the list.

I never have the "shiz... did I forget the XXXXXX" moments 5 or 10 or 50 miles into the trip!

You betcha...checklists can save you. Just retired from the Air Force and very accustomed to checklists for everything.

I can certainly see how this could happen....but he didn't seem to make any effort to see what was wrong before heading out again!
