Question What's all this flap about people?

I was talking to a Prevost owner who has been full timing for a very LONG time. He pulls a Hummer on the backside & told me that all the bras and shields people buy to prevent damage to their toad is NOT needed if that BIG REAR FLAP is removed!

He tells me ha has about 40K+ towing that Hummer & has NEVER had a rock chip the Hummer!

I'd love to pull my flap but I full time as well and have to place to keep if I decide to put it back on. Some flaps are supported by chains & can easily be hung up out of the way.

Anybody pull their flap to keep the toad from getting hit by road debris?

Whats all this flap about people?

My toad chips also stopped when I dropped the Ad-Flap. This is true for many folks with good flaps behind the drive axels. The regular flaps do it all, on highways or gravel.

I'm curious, so what's happening then....the flap is swinging in the wind and being low to the road wisks up rocks?

Am I guessing correctly there?

I like the looks of the flap, but been thinking of omitting it because I bent the dang thing somehow.

I bent the one on our '02 DSDP too.

Some people contend the flap kicks the rocks up or there's suction created and it's picking the rocks up. Seems to be some merit to it too.

You must have had a Buick Electra 225 like my parents did!

You'll hear a lot of varying opinions on the full length flaps, because folks mount them differently, drive on different kinds of roads, etc. It is my opinion that most people hang them too low. It should be minimum 6-8" above ground. Hung too low the airflow under it will create a suction that will pick up road grit by the shovelful.

I have one installed at 8 inches, and have had no problem, even before I bought my Protect-a-Tow. At this point I believe the P-a-T is the only device needed. Check it at
http://protectatow.tripod.com/. Lots of folks making copies now, but I think PaT is the simplest and best.

Yup, 1962 2-door coupe convertible, I own it now. We actually talked about it a while back. I'll post a pic sometime, I have to do some re-restoring on it though to get it back to show quality. My dad bought it new.

Hello JFXG,

That's my problem I believe, which I can't change. On my Ellipse, the flap hangs by a single oval chain link-like coupler on each end. It cannot be hung up any higher, it's only a couple inches, or less, below the tow framework, and about an inch 1/2 above the road. Sometimes it rubs the road if I go over uneven pavement. It is what it is, I'll probably take it off. Ain't that big a deal really, I'll hang the dang thing on the side of my shop.

So out of curiosity, what about replacing the solid flap with the "hula skirt" style flap?

I removed my flap once and couldn't stand the look of the rear without it so I put it back on. I'm weird that way.
