When are tanks REALLY full?
I can look down and see if the black water tank is really full. But how do you tell when the grey water tank if full? I have taken both past the full light on the panel and I can see that the black tank can take quite a bit more before it is maxed out. Does the grey water back up into the shower drain or what, if it is too full? I was just wondering what would happen if I ever got close and the kids ran a bunch of water.

I guess it depends a bit on your plumbing but for us the grey will overflow into the shower. So when there's water in the shower we know it's gone above the limit

Yes, it will back up in the shower.

Grey Tank is FULL, when you are standing in the shower in GREY WATER.
Nothing runs down anymore through the drain.

We have friends who were camped next to us with domestic water connected and grey tank dump closed on htier rig. One of their kids left a bath faucet running when we went out to dinner. When we returned water was running down the entry steps all the way from the shower.
Rule of thumb shut off water supply when ever leaving your coach. I do.

In addition to that, there is a sulphur smell that is emitted for the last 5 or so gallons before the grey reaches full in ours, eg the roof vent gets submerged and displaced gas "burps" through the drains and check valves.

Several times either the DW or I have had the experience of having grey water back up in the shower.
Both of us are now trained in how to drain the holding tanks.

Thank you very much for the replies. I thought that is what would happen. That is a great tip about turning off the water supply. I never thought about that one.

We try to remember to turn off both the shore water and the water pump to avoid the flood. Sometimes only get one of the two turned off which is useless...... :(

Same here. It's always the shower because it is the lowest item of plumbing in which the tank can back up...sinks are much higher.

How to tell when the gray water tank is really full........
Well when you look in the shower and there is an inch of standing water.. CLUE!!!
(I have 3 tanks, black, gray and wash, so alas, that "CLUE" only works for the wash tank, in my case "When the sink won't drain" )
