Which Class A's Use 16" Wheels?

Looking to upgrade our 23' 1985 Falcon Class C to a 30'(ish) Class A. Our family camps quite a bit offroad at the beach, so the tires are frequently aired up and down. It seems that the 19.5" wheels with the stiffer side walls are more prone to blowouts in talking to a few people. I have had no issues with 16" on the Class C, but do love the idea of a bigger rig for long travel and more storage. Is there any way to know what years/models/chassis used 16" wheels? Thank you in advance.

The larger tires are not more prone to blowouts. They take higher pressures and when people don't keep them to the proper inflation pressures to support the weight, they will fail due to overheating. Nothing to do with the size of the tire or the stiffness of the sidewalls.

For the ford chassis, 1997 should all be 460 cu,in with 16" wheels. There was no chassis for 1998 model year so it could be either a 1997 or 1999 depending on when it was built. The v10 will be the give away.

Going to have to go back a bunch of years to find one and you'll probably end up with an additional rear axle, aka TAG. The problem is how much weight a 16" tire AND wheel can carry. At 30' a coach might be over 10,000 lbs even before you start filling it up with stuff.

A 22.5 or 19.5" tire is no less prone to a sidewall blow out than the LT 16" tires you are used to. Over load and under inflate any tire be it car, light truck, RV or semi and something is going to give.

This is kind of what I was hoping to figure out, something that easily identified what went with what. Does anyone recall the GM chassis, maybe similarly a 454 equating to 16" wheels?

In terms of tires, we have to go LOWWW, i mean 20lbs low to get these 2 wheel drives to barrel thru the sand. I understand that airing down any tire is not ideal, but if a 19.5" tire requires 120psi, and a 16" requires 70psi, then it seems to me that going down to 20lbs would have less negative affect on a 16" wheel, hence the more common blowouts I see on larger tires when airing back up. Once you're out there, the risk is worth the reward!

The 454 engine is not an indicator. It continued to be used for a couple of years after the Chevy (and later, Workhorse) chassis switched over to 19.5" wheels. However, if a Workhorse chassis has the GM 8.1L engine, it will also have 19.5 or 22.5" wheels.

I have a Hurricane 27K and I don't think I would ever take it out in deep sand. I think the front tires have too small a contact patch. I think the higher tire pressure has to do with weight carrying capacity. Does anyone know for sure?

I would also be leery of airing down a set of duals. The chance of sidewalls rubbing could be a problem.

If you want to go sand hopping in a class A, you need to find one custom built on a half-track chassis...

Would not be worth much on the highway though.

I appreciate peoples input, but I am not looking for info regarding whether you want to air down your tires, or think its a bad idea, for the past 5 years I have done it along with 40-80 other MHs who make the same trek with no issues every weekend. I am looking for info regarding wheel size in relation to various coaches. People who had mid 90s bounders, do you recal wheel sizes?

Why don't you simply ask one of the other 40-80 MH owners you have done it with for the past 5 years with no issues every weekend...where they got a class A MH with 16" tires?

Maybe this one would work? I think it has 16" wheels.
