Only "toddb" noted an important point between open face antennas and domes. With DirecTV service, you get HD with the open face Travler. You only get SD with the domes. To get HD with a dome, you would have to go to Dish network.

We have cable at our stick house. Can someone in the same situation please explain how the billing process works and approx. how much it is when using a satellite? Can the billing be turned off and on as we are not full timers? Thanks.

Dish Network has a pay as you go program your billed per month and can pause or stop the service then restart it at some time later. This is what we use and it's been really nice.

DirectV

Won't DirectV be HD in the near future on all the dishes? If you could put up with SD for now it might be worth mentioning. Personally I have a KVH that allows in motion DirecTV SD but I don't watch TV anyway, maybe when the 101 satellite is HD, or I am in the bus more often I would.

Had portables, domes and fixed. The Winegard Traveler roof mounted is hands down the best dish you can use, because it is a full size dish like you have at home.

The portable units, while movable, have smaller antennas inside, which work fine in open areas, but will not suck a weak signal through tree branches like a full size dish. Bigger means more gain.

Also, just push one button and it sets itself up, and finds the three satellites...and one button push to stow.

Please forgive me.....we have had cable all our lives and never had a satellite. About how much is a basic plan? Can local news stations be viewed?

We never watch TV while driving so in motion is not something that interests us. However we are discussing full timing maybe in the future and it would be nice to have some stations other that PBS....lol.

If you go to the dish website you can see the different packages they offer. Also those packages will list the available stations and you can compare between packages so you know what your getting. If you create an account and use there mydish app then you can add the zip code for where your staying and get the local stations which I think is really good. In years past we couldn't do that but they have added this feature. With dish there's no additional cost for hd service. What they told me was if the program is broadcast in HD then you'll get it in HD. Now in all honesty I don't if that's because our set up includes HD receiver's and the larger dish antenna. I guess if you don't have a system and your purchasing a new one maybe the receiver's you get are set up for HD service. I would suggest that you look at there website then call and talk to a customer service representative. When I call them last August I talked to someone in a foreign country but it turns out that's how they screen calls. I was transferred to a customer service representative located in Denver and he was by far very friendly and helpful. If you go with this service I think you'll enjoy it. Good luck.
