We've been looking at used DP coaches in the 1998-2004 range and nearly all of them had a spare tire in one of the storage bins. I don't recall seeing a jack though. Can you change your own tire or does it require help from a tire service?
What's the advantage of carrying an unmounted spare?

A road service company will charge much more for the tire if they can get one. You'll be on your way in no time vs a few hours or longer.

If I would've thought far enough ahead, when I got the 6 new Michelin's this past spring, I'd have had the tire shop save the best one of the old & put it in the rear basement for a just-in-case.

Like everyone else, road side asst. ..A spare takes to much room and weight. Besides they weigh a ton, the extra tools needed to change it also adds more weight.

We recently purchased a 2010 Tioga XL. Our son and his family had borrowed the rig for the weekend. He hit a curb and blew out the rear outer tire going into a gas station.
The MH came with a spare mounted on the back. It was late Sunday night and he was in the middle of West Virginia. Luckily we carry 24-7 roadside assistance through our insurance company. Help was there in about an hour. They were able to use the spare and he and family could continue on. The 24-7 is worth the peace of mind. Safe travels.

I carry one unmounted, it's too heavy with the rim!
I don't want to pay a small fortune for an unmatched tire in the middle of no where

Our smallest tire is a 315/80 and the largest is a 365/70. Just plain too big to carry even though I have the tools to change one if already mounted.

For reference, A Bridgestone 295/75R22.5 on an aluminum wheel weighs roughly 180 pounds. Fits nicely in the compartment under my coach. I put a rope through the wheel lug hole and extend it under the tire to make it easier to drag out. In the future I want to connect a cable winch to lift it even with frame rails so I may store something underneath of it, I should have about 4" of clear space or more when it is lifted up.

My question should have been why not carry the spare tire mounted on a rim?

I have one mounted on the rear. I also have one for the karKaddy and a spare for the toad.

Spare on a 22.5 steel wheel hanging under the coach (spare ordered new with coach). Every time we replace the tires, the best looking inner rear tire/wheel combo goes under the coach and the spare gets replaced with the 5 other tires.

When I bought my new to me 05 Kountry Star, part of the purchase agreement was a new set of Michelins. I asked if they would save the best inside rear for me as a spare. As it turned out, there was no way to get the tire (235/80 22.5) into any of the basement compartments. It's simply too large. I'll have to make do with my GS card and my cell phone. Although, I do wonder now if I could hang it under the coach at the rear between the frame rails. It might fit there if I could find or fabricate a mounting system for it.

On our 1997 Allegro Bus there is a spare tire mount under the coach like your a re talking about doing..
