Guess you are using synthetic oil. I get Rotella at Tractor Supply for $11.99/gal. I can change oil, oil filter, (2) fuel filters, and lube my 3126B Cat for less than $100. Even an old fart like me can git r done in about 2 hours and 1/2 that is the lube part.

DIYer using Rotella here too. Even O'Rieley's selling that now. I use my 5 gallon wash bucket to drain in to. Yep, it gets pretty full!

Last time I changed it I wasn't quite ready for the weight of that stupid oil filter all filled up. Wasn't thinking, just had one hand on it. That took a while to clean up! You never stop learning!

Big thing here though, for me, is it's an opportunity to crawl around under it, do some PM, and to just check everything out. -Al

I change my own oil in everything I own. I still make a mess every time, drop the filter, kick the drain pan, or spill the oil pouring out of the pan, or something. But, I can do it on my time, not a schedule.

Yeah I used to do all my own routine maint. But now that were fulltimers it's impossible to find a place that will let you do it. I just stay away from the big places and look for a local shop, or ask around for a recommendation.

I use an old ice pick to punch a hole in the bottom of the filter, and another hole in the side (near the top) to allow the filter to drain into my catch pan before unscrewing.

YES, I do use either Mobile 1 Extended Performance or Castrol SynTec Edge 5W30. Both are expensive, but I usually catch it on "sale" which includes an oil filter for ~35 bucks for a 5 qt jug. So, my ANNUAL PM cost is ~ $50.00. It is about the only "advantage" us gassers have over you diesel guys.

OBTW, TS is now charging $14.99 for your 4 qts of oil..... Tractor Supply Co. - Enjoy searching:rotella t1 sae

Excellent plan! Will try that next time around. Thanks!

When I bought some last week it said $2 off so that would make original price at $13.99. Pricing is crazy from week to week. It was more expensive per gallon to get the 2.5 gallon at $34.99 than the one gallon at $11.99. I remember thinking, they are not going to be selling many 2.5 gallon jugs with this pricing.
