EVERY blowout is different. Some are on a curve, some leave you no room to maneuver, some drive perfectly straight, some pull hard, some pull slightly, but enough to drop you off a low shoulder, some blow at 20mph and some blow at 65mph, some blow in wet weather. So please expound on how you knew a steering device saved your life!

Personally, I think people believe these are life savers because of what they paid for them. I installed a Safety Plus on my Diplomat and hated how it drove. It required more driver input and made the drive more stressful at the end of the day. I sold it right away and went with a TruCenter, not for some hope of life saving steering, but for the road crown and wind adjustments you could make.

I'm not trying to give anyone a hard time and I know there is no data out there on blowouts, with and without stabilizers, but I think some are being unrealistic on what these devices do.

Watch the steer safe video. It is not a stretch to say the system will reduce the effect of a blowout on the steering. Even if you only believe it is 10% it's still worth it.

I also must say that I believe I am good driver but I take issue with those who think that all they need is proper skills,, which they incidentally have.

I think a steering damper is a must for everyone.

Just so you know, many Jeeps have them factory standard. They are also very popular on motorcycles.

I think you're making a pretty broad statement for a product that is more of a feel good item then the life saver some think. Folks......it's a shock absorber or a set of springs, depending on brand, that adds some resistance to the steering, but won't stop the steering from jerking right or left in a blowout or sudden drop off of a low shoulder.

Buy a steering product to eliminate wind push, wandering or a even a loose front end, but don't bank on it saving your life in a blowout. Be realistic and practice in your mind what you would do in a blowout. Expecting a product to save your life in a blowout is probably more dangerous than the blowout itself.

Don, the SteerSafe adds 400 lbs of resistance to each wheel! I think that can make a huge difference in the control you have in case of a blowout! Thankfully I haven't had the opportunity to test them, but you're right, it's definitely a "feel good" item for me!

I had a LF blowout on the Sunday before Memorial Day weekend. I'm still waiting for the MH to get back to me from the repair shop. $25,000+ in damages. That's not the worst part - which is how close we came to disaster. Four of us inside when it blew, in #4 lane, ended up going across three lanes and missing the K rail by a couple of feet. I've been reading about blowouts and how to handle the rig so I was ready in my mind for this to happen. The blowout was incredibly loud, the MH took a hard left turn and shook violently! My vision was blurred, it was shaking so hard. I got it over to the right shoulder and amazing all of the nearby cars scattered and no one was hit. Both of my hands were sprained from the steering wheel.

When I get it back, the first thing that goes on is a steering stabilizer kit!

Sounds very violent. Did it yank the wheel out of your hands or did it just twist your arms? Your Sig is no small DP. Also, what brand and how old was the tire? Did you determine the cause? Thanks for the details.

I had both hands on the wheel and it yanked the wheel immediately to the left, my hands tightened down on the wheel to hang on and try to stop the turn and that's when they were sprained. By then the coach was already headed across the lanes. The tires were Goodyear, exactly 5 years old, no signs of exterior deterioration. I did not see anything that I might have run over, I had been watching diligently, early in the morning and wide awake.

I have steer safe on our 2001 Airstream XC 360. Two years ago returning from Charlotsville, VA, we had the left front tire blow out at the Mississippi state libe doing about 65 mph. Yhers was no jerk to either side and I had the cruise control on and I did not hit the accelerator, I gently applied the brakes and pulled into a truck weight station.
No fear at all and no panic.

I had a RF blow out about 50 miles south of Chicago on I55. The wheel vibrated back and forth, but was totally controllable. The Michelin video looks good in theory, but I doubt it's usefulness in a real blow out. The last thing you want is more speed. I tapped the cruise off and coasted to the side of the road.

Trust me all right or left front tire blowouts are NOT the same!
