Width of Class A motorhomes
we have a 2005 fleetwood storm 31a. Its width, without the slides being used is 102 Inches. Is this the standard width size or are there class A motorhomes that are not 102 inches wide. The wife would love to get one that is not so wide. I did a google on width of Class A and found on Yahoo answers comments saying 8 ft. was the width!!! Thanks bob

Question would be ; where is the measurement taken ?
Inside of the walls ? Outside of the body ? Outside of the mirrors ?
I haven't taken a tape to my coach to compare it's listed measurements to actual size.

Most are built at 8.5' though not technically legal in all states.

As far as a thinner unit not really sure.

Thor Axis/Vegas is just 94" wide.
There have been a few others in the last 20 years since wide bodies (8'6" vs. 8') became common, but not many.
Sprinter based stuff is narrower too, most being Class C's though.

Be aware that most if not all those sits that purport to be a synopsis of state laws are wrong. I know the AAA one is for WA as the legal motorhome length is 45', not 40' as stated.
Their length stated for CA is also suspect but I haven't checked it lately. I do know that over 40' MH's are restricted to only certain roads.

To be absolutely legal in all states, 96" is the max width.
But the National Network roads (interstates, most Federal highways, some state road) allow 102" as a maximum width.
These measurement do not include awning, mirrors, other safety equipment.

Federal law limits vehicle width to 8' 6 1/2" (102 1/2") not including mirrors. Truck, trailer, toad, load, whatever. Anything wider is considered oversize load and must be marked accordingly. Grab a tape and head out to the lot and see for yourself. (i always wondered where that half inch came from)

Winnebago current designs are what they call "wide body" and listed in specifications as 101 1/2" or 8' 5 1/2" wide. The bottom 40" of the RV is actually within this width. Above that height it is about 4 or 5 " wider due to items mounted on the coach sides ( door grab handle, slides protude slightly when retracted, awning rails, mirrors even when folded in.
They are putting a foot note in their product brochure to check the width allowed in your local jurisdiction. My research says that 8' 6" is the limit almost everywhere in the USA.
There a few states where the laws / regulations on the books are out of sync with the rest of USA, and officially say 8' 0". Apparently they are just being ignored by everyone.

For finding one narrower you'd have to check which ones you're interested in getting. However, would 6" narrower or so really make a difference? I don't think that small difference would limit me to which one to buy.

Has anyone ever been stopped for driving an "oversized rig"? And if so what would they do about it? Its not like it is a trailer load. Its not going to change.

The Tiffin Breeze is a smaller diesel pusher and the exterior width is 95".

6" narrower is not going to make much difference in driving or parking the motorhome. Why the DW thinking of narrower options?

My 2015 holiday rambler is 102" wide not including mirrors, I have been all over the us without issue. The brochure does say in fine print to check your local ordnance prior purchase.
