Will reversed polarity at the post hurt my RV?
Just arrived at a nice state park campground in my new Vista. I haven’t yet hooked up because th surge protector is indicating reversed polarity. Is this harmful to the coach? TIA for any help.

Since the RV is new, possibly it's the RV / surge protector that is wired backwards.
If you had a multimeter (and know how to safely use it), you can tell if the neutral is connected to ground (no voltage across) and that the hot is where the hot should be (has voltage when compared to ground (and neutral). This is 110volt (not 220) specific.

I only mentioned that it was new because I had read that some older coaches were wired differently. I know the RV and surge protector are OK, because I’ve been using both for about 10 months without problems. Further, I’ve checked other posts in campground and they read perfectly. The park host says someone pulled out earlier today and hadn’t reported problems. Naturally, the park is fully booked so there’s no other site to which to move. It’s going to get cold tonight and I’m not prepared to boondock. (Inadequate propane, and nearby vendors are closed on Sunday. Decisions, decisions.

The panel will have to come off your pedestal and see if there is 120v on the neutral wire.......or take a meter and check/test the incoming side of your surge protector to see what may be going on.

Park maintenance came out and found an open ground and some voltage on the neutral wire. Replaced the receptacle, verified the proper connections and now we are all good, according to his Fluke multimeter and my surge protector. Kudos to Oklahoma State Parks (Beavers Bend, in particular) for prompt, courteous, and professional service.

Nonetheless, for future reference, what are the likely consequences of unknowingly plugging into a post with reversed polarity?

Thanks for sharing your story. That is exactly why I installed a Progressive EMS surge protector in my Winni Vista 29VE! Good to hear your all fixed up.

I very much appreciated the link. Indeed, very helpful in explaining the dangers, even on an appliance as simple as a lamp. I see so many RV’s connected directly to the power post without a surge protector that I cannot help but think that more than a few have hooked up to faulty wiring unknowingly. Even if things appear to ‘work ok’, and no one is hurt, I still wonder what the most likely potential damage to the coach might be, whether recognized immediately or not.

A lot of us have EMS units hard wired into our RVs, so you can't tell by looking at someone's power cord, if they do or don't have an EMS.
