Wiring ? or What

We have a 2002 Allegro Motor Home. Work Horse Frame P32 with Chevrolet Vortec Engine and front suspension.
1. Sometimes, Turning the key on the dash lights etc. come on, the alternator charging gage goes to the center position. Then when turning the key further to start it is like everything goes to dead ground. The panel gages zero out and nothing. By repeating this it will start and the engine runs. However, the alternator-charging indicator stays in the same position like the battery never had a load.
2. The electric step was operating and ones again it will not go out. The step light comes on but the step doe not operate. When the engine started without the dead ground problem the step operated?
3. The headlights come on when starting and stay on. It seems that they cannot be turned off?
Are these all related to ?? Something in the steering column or ???

That's odd. I have the same rig and mine does not do any of the things you mention. I even have a separate switch for headlight operation and it is manual like the old days. I have to turn them on.

You may want to post this in the Workhorse Chassis group if you haven't already. There are some very helpful people over there. May even find some similar post with solutions. Good luck.

How's all the battery cables look? Check all the ground cables going from battery to frame for good connections. Pull all the battery cables ( one at a time ) and clean the terminals. Be sure to take a picture of the cables before disconnecting for future reference.
