Working with Eternabond

Getting ready to apply Eternabond to the seams on the roof. For those of you with experience working with it, did you find there was a maximum length that was still easy to apply? Or were you able to apply a strip down the entire length of the MH without a problem?

Along those lines, I'm curious as to how well the Eternabond applies and holds to a textured aluminum surface like on our KIT 5er?

If you pull the backing off as you go you should be able to go any length you wish and cut it at your end point. You might want to strike a chalk line in order to keep it straight.

Generally on the short pieces, less than 24", I would peel off the backing and CAREFULLY put it in place and roller it down. On longer runs I would measure the length and cut the the tape to size. Then starting at one end, remove approximately 18" of the backing at a time and work my way to the end of the run. Then go back and roller everything down good. Make sure you know how you want to apply the tape cause once it's down, it's down, and you will have a devil of a time trying to adjust it. It sticks instantaneously !!! Just be sure the area your applying it to is clean and dry. Again once it's down, it's down !!!

I think it will stick to just about any clean, dry, solid surface.

Bob,

Go to the Eternabond website and they have a video library. There is one video specific to repair of a seam. I recently purchased a 4" X 50' roll of white and covered a seam across my coach that was beginning to look a little suspicious. I cleaned the roof over the seam and let it dry thoroughly. I rolled out the length of tape I needed to go all the way across the roof. I peeled back the liner at one end and slowly applied the tape across the roof seam. I didn't do this but in hind sight I should have marked a straight line across the roof 2" parallel to the seam. I just tried to keep the tape centered to the seam as I applied it and that was a bit of a challenge. The only significant problem I encountered was a previous owner had installed external cables to the rear for sattelite that I had to go under. I had to pull those up and then calk them back to the roof. I've also patched a couple of small spots where tree limbs jumped out and hit the roof as I drove by.

Also, order the rubber roller for installation. I ordered the 2" and it worked great.

I ran a 30' length down each side of the MH and it was fairly easy. A reference line was used to keep it straight. I started by peeling the backing off a small section and stuck it to the front of the roof to get started. Then I used one hand to place the tape and the other to pull the backing from under it. Pretty simple.. Just remember to clean with Acetone or something similar first and roll it down to bond it. I used a wallpaper seam roller. I hope this helps.

Make sure you use a flow type sealant on the leading edge that faces the front of the coach. The wind / weather will lift the leading edge over time if you don't.

I did the entire length of my 40 footer with one piece (at least on one side...the other side was broken by the fridge vent. I started at the front with about 3 feet of the backer peeled off, then walked, peeled and stuck. Once down I went back over it with the roller. The entire process (both sides, front and back, roof vents) took me about 2 hours.

This stuff will stick to anything except silicone.

EternaBond

Regarding this stuff sticking to irregular surfaces: I had a pesky leak around my chimney on my house. Used EternaBond all the way around, sticking it to the Bricks and the shingles, like flashing. It worked great for 5 years. Then when I had the house reroofed, the guys really struggled getting the stuff off! They did the best they could scraping and cursing it off, then flashed over the residue that was left. This stuff is great! Kind of the ultimate Ductape.

If the original Dicor or whatever is adhering tightly to the surface there is no need to remove it. Just make sure any loose stuff is removed and the entire area is cleaned and dry. If the sealant is silicone based then that should be removed as best as possible. Eternabond does not stick well to anything silicone.
