You say they only changed one filter in the transmission? The allison has two filters. filter pack runs about 55 bucks. If it has transsend that's almost 200 bucks for 5 gallons. I do all my own maintenance.

Does my 1991 Allison HT 747 4 speed transmission have 2 filters or 1?

For having a shop do the work, that's not terribly out of line.

As an aside -- note that the 'extended life fluid' (Transynd) in the Allisons is NOT based solely on mileage in a Motorhome application. You must (especially if under warranty) change the filters and top off every 3yrs and the fluid every 4yrs.

Not trying to start a lengthy debate -- just want to ensure people aren't following trucker maintenance schedules. Because of moisture content, etc... motorhomes operate on a different schedule.

I just did all of this myself and figure I spent $450--$500 on the materials alone. Filters and lots of oil can add up pretty quick.

Am i getting hosed?
The dealer that I purchased from charges $75 per hour as an incentive to purchase from him again in the future. Non-customers pay $110.00 Joe

I have heard that some dealers charge as high as $140 per hour. So I think you got a decent rate. Joe

How many miles, typically, before a diesel engine oil change would be due, if going by mileage rather than time?
Ours is 15,000 or once a year, which ever comes first. We don't have a choice. Even though we will not have 15,000 on in a year we must do the yearly work to keep our warranty in effect. Joe

Thank God I do all our vehicle maintenance myself - including our Dodge/Cummins truck...

AND, if you document all your own maintenance with dates performed, and receipts for fluids and filters, your warranty stays in effect...

BUT then, I guess if you can afford $150K and better for them fancy new rigs, $950 for annual service is chump change...

Even with an old MH you are going to pay the current hourly labor rate.
I have a 454 in my '88 MH, a HEMI in my '06 300, the filters cost the same at Wally World. I do my own service on all of my toys, from motorcycles to motorhomes. $950 a year pays for the service on all of my wheels. I wouldn't say that Gary is jealous or an @$$ H@(), he's just saying big bad toys cost and you have expect to pay or DIY.

Sound about right?

Nope, I am on my 4th class A MH all been gas. Just picked up a 2008 Windsport and called to get cost for oil and filter fron repair shops and Ford dealer. They all said $85,00 to $100.00 and I said this gas. They said yep that is the cost for 6 Q of oil and a filter. Changed myself for $29.00 and didn't even have to lift the front end to get to the oil plug and filter.
