Sounds like a lot of apples to oranges comparisons have been posted. I only have experience with Iowa and Arkansas. In Arkansas I pay about $27 for registration.
In Iowa, when I lived there, everyone considered registration much higher because the county just gave you one figure you had to pay which included per. property tax and registration and you didn't get any breakdown on costs.
In Arkansas you can't get the $27 registration until you can prove you have purchased insurance, also you can't get the $27 registration until you can prove you have paid the per. property tax which is at a different office. Also you have to have proof of assessment of per. property items from the assessors office. Once you've collected these three items, then you can get the $27 registration, so it's not quite so cheap as it sounds when I say our registration is about $27 in Arkansas.
