I'm gonna play devil's advocate here.

I certainly understand someone not wanting to loan out something as big, as valuable or personal as a motor home. What I don't understand is why people would be so flummoxed by someone making the ask. It's a question folks. You have the right to say yes, no or maybe. The question itself isn't that outrageous. A lot depends on the who is doing the asking and maybe even the why. If you don't want to loan it, fine. People ask questions all the time that probably would be better not asked but that is humanity. The world is full of those who think they can get a deal from friends or relatives. Some of the worst offenders that I have known have been professionals and high placed politicians. I call them "users" and I am fine with them asking because that is exactly what I expect from them. I know exactly what I can expect to get back from them in return (usually nothing) and tailor my responses accordingly. However, I can also envision scenarios where my basic "no loan" policy might be flexible. So it really all depends.

I understand the fact that our motor home is the 2nd most expensive thing most of us own. I've grown up and realized, it's just property. It has insurance. I loaned ours to my mom once. No problems. My friend asked about using it to go from Ohio to New York. I agreed. He said when he got back, he'd pay $500 for the use of it, plus pay if anything broke. Nothing broke and I got my $500. We did go through the rv and he made several videos of me explaining how to set up. I'd do it again. The way I look at insurance, if they total it, I get to pick ours a newer and bigger one!

You would also need to know if they are insured to drive a motorhome. I would bet that most people aren't.

My wife was floored. We are very meticulous about how we keep our unit (as I am sure everyone is) and would not even lend our MH to our own grown Kids. Although they realize how personal it is and would never even think of asking.

Apparently, people who don’t have motorhomes haven’t the foggiest clue as to how personal a Motorhome is to the owners.
It's almost like "Can I borrow your wife for a few weeks?"

TAKE MY WIFE PLEASE, But don't touch the Motor Home.

Thumbs down no no no no no

The problem is everything everyone has already mentioned and for some reason,( maybe it is the water ) but society has changed, not like it use to be ( o.k. I am old ) but no one seems to have any common sense anymore. Who in their right mind would let someone borrow a $XXXX.XX motor home. They could go rent one if they only need it for the funeral. If they Can't afford to rent one, you know they can't afford to clean and or fix your's when they return it, dirty, broken and with an empty fuel tank.

I've been mildly surprised at how many folks have suggested things we can do now that I own a motorhome. I've discovered that I'm the designated driver for football tailgates .. the provider of the "party bus" for bachelor parties ... as well as driver of the "team bus" for my adult league hockey teams. Most of it is said in jest .. but not all of it.

I've had to make it clear to the couple of folks were actually waiting for a response that my motor coach is my retirement home - and that it won't be being used as a "party bus" anytime in the foreseeable future.

I have no problems with being asked ... as long as whoever asks has no problems with my automatic "No!" response.

We've never actually lived in a real house, but we've spent a lot of time in industrial bunkhouses, so we should be fine.

Whaddya say, bud?

John & Diane, I just reread your post

I'm guessing you meant 'institutional' bunkhouses. That sounds like good enough references for me. I'll call you before we leave and tell you where key is and I'll stock up food and beer.

When I had my previous MH for sale a couple with two small kids came to look at it. Next thing they asked me if I would rent it to them for a couple of weeks as they wanted to take a family vacation!

I asked if they had ever driven anything that big - no.
Do you have an air brake endorsement - no
Do you have a class D (Ontario) license -no
Do you want to buy my motorhome - no
Will I rent it - NO
Bye - have a nice day

Chris

Haha!
I'm stupid too, but not in the way the borrowers in these stories are.
