Then, a buddy bought essentially the same rig, and reports mileage within a tenth of mine.

What irks me are the ones which defy the hp/weight relationship, like a Prevost-driving friend who cruises with his hair on fire and still manages to get 7-8 mpg in a heavier rig with 75 more hp than us. His Detroit Diesel is a more efficient engine, apparently. At $3.32 a gallon, that's up to $95 difference, every 500 miles. Danged!
By comparison my Cat C12 pushing 37,000 lbs down the road hardly ever gets less than 8 mpg. That's with a heavy foot on the pedal and a cruise speed of ~63 (needed to get into 6th). My engine lacks any of the later year emission controls which helps improve its fuel economy.

17 mpg? Something's not right. I have a 43 DSDP and the best I've ever gotten is 9.3mpg. I did once get 20 mpg....but that was on a very long downgrade with my foot off the accelerator pedal. As soon as I leveled out at the bottom it was back to 9 mpg.

That is a great question.
Just like your reported 17+ MPG, I believe you will find that your quoted figure, "9 mpg (national average)", is a bit high for class A diesels.
I'm looking forward to your average of the MPG figures of those who reply.

BTW, the average of the 8 posts so far, including my 8.5 is 8.51875 MPG, (however if your 17 mpg were included the average jumps to 9.46).

Got 5.5 to 6 with or without 28 ft trailer. 8.9 ISL cummins. Just put in a programmer and went to 7mpg no trailer. Went from so. Fl. to N.D and on way back now I will get most of the chip money back this trip. Going to check the trailer mpg next run. I check mpg every fill up with an I phone app. These heavy aero challenged houses on wheels sure do like dead dinosaurs.

Lots of sizes and weights. Everyone with a different weight to their foot. Some below GVW, some over. Some lie, some dont.

My rig is what it is, and I carry more and less than others. The wind and the grades vary. When the tank gets to about 1/4, I fill it.

Because the Journey is my Destination, it somehow just does not matter what my mileage is.

Nuff said?

Previous coach was a 1995 Safari Trek 28' with a GM 6.5TD engine. Would typically get ~10mpg towing, ~11-12mpg not towing. Sure miss that fuel mileage - current gasser coach gets ~6-7 mpg.

Mel, I get it, 17 was obviously incorrect, we have already established my odometer is incorrect and I will be checking mileage on my next trip. I did not lie I was obviously mistaken. I am obviously a new owner that has lots of questions and not much experience. Along with this inexperience I will probably make obserd comments that a salty dog like you will find very tempting to keep rubbing my nose into. I would appreciate if you would not follow my posts, posting reminders of my mistakes, remembering that it was my first trip. So give me a break.

'Gotta say, I've enjoyed reading this thread. I'd suspect there'd be less enthusiasm, discussing whether or not drunk driving should be legalized, the pros and cons of topless beaches.

We're getting ready to do a 300 mile tailwind leg back from the beach today, you betcha I'll be fixated on that SilverLeaf readout!

Thanks

As a follow-up to my previous post, my observed mpg is based on running with the cruise control set on 60 MPH with the tranny set in "economy" mode. The only exception being the mountain grades. This gives me the best overall mileage.

Thanks, and congratulations.... (it takes a "better man" to admit he may be wrong).
It was not my intent to rub your nose into it, but something did not seem right....Sorry!
Please post what mileage you find in the future.
