My Scangauge says 9999 mpg every time I go down a hill, does that count? Really I avg. 8.2 mpg with a 330 cat 38' 2000 Dutch Star, pulling an 03 Durango, abt. 4300lb. But that was East of the Rockies. Haven't made the Great Divide in this moho yet.

I am curious if the RV's with lower mileage have the rear or side mounted charged air coolers. And also if those lower mileage units have the CAC checked for leaks. From what I understand performance and fuel could take a huge hit if they are leaking air.

In our '08 Journey w/ 350 Cummins we are getting 10 mpg so far but don't have our toad rigged with baseplate yet. I'm certain it will come down pulling our Mini Coop Convertible.

I started a year ago and have driven 8500 miles and haven't checked the mileage, guessing around 6, costing about $40 hour to move it LOL. We're in the mountains now so it doesn't count much but I just started to check mileage. I've been driving in the low 60's.

This brings my total mileage this year so far to 8.2134 per gal. Only one small 1833 mile trip through northern New Mexico so far.
Now you know not to trust your fuel gage or speedometer. Looking forward to your next mileage checks.

Speedometer and odometer are totally different. It's VERY possible to be 5% (or more) under on the speed and 5% (or more) over on the odometer.

Don't want to challenge anyone, but "totally" different, aren't they both being fed by the transmission/transmission control module? Where exactly do the 5% tolerances come from, just asking. 30 years or so ago, it was not uncommon for tolerances to be quite a bit higher than they are now, just saying that some of our assumptions might be based on experiences, etc from the "good old days" like when oil changes were every 2000 miles and only adding 1 quart between go you bragging rights.

On the same line, reading through the posts, do I understand that "we" assume the GPS to be deadly accurate and the odometer to be in error? Why come??

Yes I agree that I would not ness put all stock on the GPS figures as they may not be able to account for the added distance from change in elevation. I'm not 100% on that but I would think close enough.
My RV had a recall to change the tires from 175 to 195s due to weight but I don't believe they adjusted the Speedo to account for the larger tires. Seems to be off about 7mph around 60. So my mpg is prob not as good as what I calculate due to the millage is prob more than what the odometer is saying.

There are several ways to check the accuracy of your speedometer. You can use the mile markers alongside the road. The easiest way is to be doing an indicated 60 and using a stopwatch see how much you are off in a mile. I like to be able to do 5 or 10 miles to be more accurate.
If you have larger tiers you are turning fewer revolutions per mile and problem getting better than indicated mileage.

9,747mi @ 62-67mph typical cruising = 7.51mpg. All over the south west and mid west USA 4down towing a 4,820lb Trailblazer. Dash AC on 2/3 of the time, 2k inverter on running the 2 fridges on el. with batteries charged from the alternator. Rarely run our genny going down the road. Cat Scale weighted, (liquids 3/4 filled most of the time) rig at 28,640 + toad at 4,820 = 33,460lbs rolling down the hwy. Mileage confirmed/compared to our Garmin GPS. We have the side (hyd. 1 speed fanned) radiator.

Happiest when we are rolling down the road.

You most have the short trailblazer. We have the extended version with the V8 and the darn thing weighs 6200lbs. Lots of difference for an extra foot. I guess GM purposely put it over 6000lbs due to tax laws allowing businesses to write off vehicles over 6k all in one year. Something to that effect.

People assume the GPS to be far more accurate because it is purely measuring your movement through space in a given time, based on external observation. Your odometer and speedo, otoh, are calculating your speed and distance traveled based on the measured revolutions of certain parts of the drive train, and the assumed revolution count of your wheels on the pavement. All these measurements are subject to calibration and wear errors, and in older vehicles often add up to about a 2-3% error, roughly 100-150 feet per mile. Tires, for example: wear 1/8 inch of tread off of a 36 inch diameter tire, and you've got about a 1% error in your readings, and no way to adjust for it.

However, the GPS has probability errors as well, but these potential errors are assumed to be mitigated by the calculation software that runs the system. I've often compared my GPS position to reality while parked in a campground or RV park by simply walking around the coach and using visual bearings, and the errors have ranged from dead-nuts zero to about 10-12 feet. As much as we'd like to, we can't assume absolute accuracy, so I figure 6-8 feet on average is pretty fair. You could run 600 miles in a day, and the total error factor in the calculated distance might only amount to 15 feet over that 600 miles, compared to the 100 feet PER MILE of the mechanical system.

The GPS might not ALWAYS be way more accurate, but its usually a safe bet.

Just returned from a short trip to north Georgia towing our Accord on a dolly. Got 8.18 MPG traveling mostly back roads/ state and US highways to and from.

(speaking slowly) I know it is hard Mel but try to remember back as far as yesterday, my ERROR which you are referring to was that I initially THOUGHT I had a trip yielding 17mpg, but AGAIN that was WRONG, YES Mel, that was WRONG. Remember my odometer (the little spinning thingamajig on the dash that spins round and round while the RV is moving, well Mel it turns out it was spinning a little too fast causing me to think I drove further than I did. Mel, IMO it does not take a big man to admit his mistakes. It takes a big man to show humility and kindness to others.

Good luck in your travels too, night night.

Chill!
Sorry You misunderstood the intent of my posts to you.
I said, or thought, nothing derogatory about you.
My last post to you was a compliment for not continuing to insist that your original figure was correct after being presented with additional facts.

Sleeping pill???
Where did that come from?
There's no need to get nasty and insinuate things about which you know nothing.
Mediocre Mel
