We live in southwest Missouri, and are about 90 miles from Branson and we own 3 different "permanent campsites" in private campgrounds. No, I'm not a rich man; just made a few bargain-basement purchases online a few years back on E-bay.
Each of the sites is about 60-90 miles away, and each has water and electric. It gives us variety, without a major haul. Plus, when we go to Branson/Silver Dollar City, the savings of RV vs. Motel more than pays for the gas, and there's much less stress about "the drive home."
My point is, there are probably multiple options for many of us, if we just think outside the box a bit, and look for ways to make an RV work for us!

We are (hopefully) less than 2 years from retirement, but have rv'd a LOT since 2005. We grab weekends whenever we can, and since I'm a teacher, and DH is military, he saves his leave to coincide with my vacation time, so Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and summer are larger chunks of time to RV. Our goal is to hit the road full time in June 2013 but until then, we're in it every chance we get. Our freshman in college who lives at home has already begun complaining that we're gone too. much. For some reason, both of us can relax more away from home. We'll even go if the weather is rainy. This past summer we left the new coach at Oregon Motor Coach for much of the summer for a lot of upgrades and repairs of lot rot it had suffered at the hands of lousy dealerships, and we went nuts. Must be in the RV more.
