We just played it by ear , not knowing where we would end up at night. Just lucked out on the rim by getting one of their log cabins on the rim. Said they had a tour group cancel and had rooms available. no other issues of finding a place to stay, even occasionally in hotels and motels. no schedule equals lots of freedom.

When you retire you'll have more time to take leisurely trips and really enjoy it. When you don't have to rush and can spend as long as you want at a spot --it gets really fun.
