Take that guy with a grain of salt. He may have been a MB mechanic for 30 years, but if your EGT is over 1400-1800*F you've melted a piston. Get a ScangaugeII or a bluetooth adapter and Torque Pro app on your phone ($12 for adapter, $10 for Torque Pro app) so you can monitor Exhaust Gas Temp (EGT) The highest EGT I've seen was 1194* during a regen cycle. Typical EGT is 700-900*F.
I'm not running 10w-60 motor oil because some guy on the internet said it was a good idea. Use oil approved by MB. He is right on a few points, change your air filter, change your oil/filter regularly (earlier than recommended by MB), and longer trips are better than lots of short trips.
Mobil One ESP (Emission System Protection) 5w-30 meets MB specs 229.31/229.51
it's a low ash oil designed for diesels with DPF.
X2 on what he said. I have seen this article batted around the internet enough to know that is mostly his opinion and not factual. There are a few pearls in there but I take the whole article with a block of salt.
