Mileage differences
I have been looking at used class b's (Roadtrek's) with Chevy chassis. There were two engine options the 5.7L (350) small block or the 8.1L (496) big block.
I am wondering if anyone can tell me the differences in gas milage between the two versions.
Thanks
STEVE

I would pick the 8.1L engine. The 5.7L is more of a small pickup engine . Depending on how heavy it is loaded , the 5.7 could actually get worse mileage than the 8.1 . It will also be downshifting a lot more and really screaming going up hills. The 8.1 will have plenty of power and not be working near as hard.

MPG is more related to weight than to displacement. Except for the fact that the 8.1 engine install weighs more than the 5.7, your rig will get the about same mileage with either. I'd not even think about the 5.7, go with the 8.1. More power is always good. This larger displacement will also give you better braking than the 5.7, not much, but some.

Are you sure it’s not a Class C?
8.1 seams really big for a Class B.

Yep, ran the VIN and thats how I got flagged to the motor, then chedked RT's website and it shows 5.7L as standard motor and 8.1L as optional.
What I am trying to find out is if there is a significant difference in gas mileage.
Thanks
STEVE

This is a Class B though a fully equipped van style? There may be some difference not sure if I would be too concerned.

In an unloaded pickup the 5.7 will get better mileage. In one which is pulling a heavy load, the 8.1 would. You could read this from people posting on other forums where a lot of comparison's occur discussing 6.0 vs 8.1 pulling power and mileage. The short story is that if you are working it, you want the 8.1 for mileage, power and most importantly durability. I have a suburban with the 8.1 and it is a great engine.

I have 2015 c190p, it has 6.0 with 6speed transmission. I get 14-15 town, highway 18-21 at 60mph very happy.
