Newbie question about slides

We're just beginning our education on RVs and are leaning toward a B+. I've seen some that have a slide that operates on hydraulics and some on a rack and pinion system. I don't understand either system, nor the advantages/disadvantages of each system. I would appreciate your input.

Both slide systems use a 12V motor. Basic systems use the electric motor to drive a screw that pushes out the slide, and then is kept square by the rack and pinion system and a synchronizing cross bar between the rack arms.

The hydraulic systems uses the same rack to keep it square, but instead a hydraulic pump is driven by a 12V motor, and then a cylinder pushes or pulls the ram.
