What year is my class B?

We bought our new Winnebago ERA about 3 weeks ago. Most folks are aware that Winnebago built the ERA as a 2010 model then took a year off for redesign and the "new ERA" is advertised as a 2012 model. We found it interesting that when we received our title, the ERA is actually classified as a 2011 model based, I must assume, on the manufacturing date of the Sprinter Chassis. One reason we were surprised is we've purchased 3 Class A motorhomes that were actually built on "last years" chassis but were titled as the model year the coach was actually built, not on the year the chassis was manufactured. I can only assume we own a 2011 ERA because that's the year the van chassis/body was manufactured as a unit where as a class A has the coach body manufactured during the time the coach is built. Hope this assumption makes some level of sense, if so, am I correct or is there another explanation?

Vehicles are generally always classified by the year the chassis was built. They identify vehicles by vin numbers not any serial numbers or model numbers from the mfr.

The Sprinter can be bought as an incomplete chassis just like motor home chassis can be.
That means they fall under the same rules for model year designations as a motor home I would think.
In that case the model year is based on when the Class B was built on the chassis not when the chassis was produced.

See SPRINTER CHASSIS

Congrats on your new B. As others have mentioned, the chassis seems to get top billing when it comes to registration in many if not most states. My B is a Roadtrek and it's not unusual for owners to refer to a model as a 2012/2011 if it the chassis is a carry-over but there are changes to the design of the motor home portion.

We requested and received a letter from Winnebago stating that our ERA is a 2012, not a 2011. When the letter arrived, we took it along with our "2011 title" to the DMV in hopes of getting the year correctly stated on the title. The window clerk did not even look at our letter, rather said she needed to look at the data sheet they received to initially title our ERA. WE watched her pull the forms, speak to her supervisor and she then returned to apologize for the error. She said the title clerk only looked at the Sprinter vin # and should have looked at the documentation sent by the manufacturer, Winnebago. 30 seconds later, we had a new title for a 2012 ERA and we were on our way. Needless to say, we are very pleased with the DMV's reaction and we thanked the clerk for her help and quick response to our problem.

Under Federal Law the unit MUST be registered using the complete vehicle manufacturers Statement of Origin, NOT the chassis year.

Here is the RVIA .pdf on it http://dyna-vault.com/images/Q&As%20...Motorhomes.pdf

Wow - this is perhaps the 1st positive comment on the DMV.
Congratulations on the new rig. I've been intrigued by the Sprinter chassis, but my pockets aren't deep enough to go that direction. Enjoy it and use it as often as you can.

All the DMV did was follow Federal Law.

Following the Fed law was not the amazing thing! The amazing thing is they found their own error by looking at the paperwork in their files, admitted the mistake, and apologized for my inconvenience. AND-----there was absolutely NO HASSLE. Now THAT's amazing!!!!
