I figure that most owners of xc chassis 04-08 that have ISB cummins have a FUEL STRAINER that is located above pass side rear wheel well. I just changed mine and I tell you I could think of about 20 better places that Freightliner could have placed this..part number rai-25rac10..13.95

Question based on curiosity more than anything else - How many miles did you have on that filter (strainer) (read fuel used) before you changed it? Did you cut it open to see if you had much or any debris in it? Reason for question - I installed a similar strainer on my pickup, pre fuel pump, and changed it regularly. After dissecting several and finding absolutely nothing in the screen, I decided to just let it run. More than 80,000 miles later still no signs of loss of fuel flow.

Yes, I realize and understand manufacturers recommendations for preventive maintenance items and I also know how miserable it is to even get your hand on that strainer if you had to change it on the road let alone a nice clean garage.

The filter had close to 15k miles and the first thing I did was cut it open. I discovered I could not see daylight threw the screen and the filter had traped quite a bit of crap that had turned into a mudd like appearance. The filter was not plugged but was restricted. The reason I replaced the filter was I had a lift pump fail and Cummins reccomended that I change filter and carry another one with me as they had many a coach that had fuel delivery problems caused by this filter lately. By the way this filter is a Freightliner part and not Cummins.
This is the second time I changed this filter and I have my own shop. I raise the rear of the Motorhome as high as I can with levelers then use a 10klb floor jack to raise a bit more followed by 2 20k jack stands. Changing this filter on the road would be a hard and long process as this filter is in the middle of a bunch lines and harness's all wraped in tape and tie downs. I took extra time and moved things around so as to access the filter a bit easier next time..its recomended to replace filter every year in my owners manual.

Warren,

Thanks for the quick response. You did the right thing for the right reasons and your investigation proves it. Perhaps I'd better put my contortionist suit on and get under there to change mine.

Do I assume correctly that since this fuel strainer is a Freightliner installation my Expedition with the Cat engine will have it also? Or is this something Freightliner did for Cummins only?
