My expansion tank is leaking some, & I would like to fix it before it fails. I have read many complaints of the plastic rotting due to UV rays. I called Freightliner the other day, & it is no longer offered. They are proposing a conversion that would run around 700-800 dollars, parts only. The expansion tank used to cost around 150 dollars. What have others done, & is their a place to buy the original part? Maybe someone has some old stock! Does anyone have any suggestions for a repair to the current tank, or another alternative.

Thanks

Quote a few people have had tank problems and have used a variety of replacements. If you join the Freightliner Chassis Owners Club on Yahoo Groups you can see several alternative solutions, none costing $700+. A Sterling Truck (another Freightliner brand) tank is one choice.

If you just can't find one 'made' for it, I'd think all is not lost. There's no rocket science to an overflow tank. I'd just hunt up one, out of anything, with approximately the same capacity, that you think you can fit into the space available. You should be able to figure out a way to mount it, hook up your overflow line, and your'e off to the races.

Dirtbuster, some have used J B Weld. The kind that comes in the stick form, you kneed it to mix. Apply to the area of the leak.
Clean the area to get a better bond. That will seal the leak, just do not put the radiator cap on tight though.
The plastic tanks have ruptured and sprayed coolant on the toad.
Wonder if the tanks are out stock because they come from Japan with the shutdown of many of there auto suppliers.
Know of some Bounder owners that have received new tanks in the past 2 months.
Bad idea using plastic containers for liquids that are very hot and under pressure. Bottom line they are cheep to make.
Bean counters should be made to reimburse anyone that has been directly affected by bottom line item failures. This is only one item related to cost before reliability. There are a number of things made from plastics used in the transportation industry that are failing. fuel lines and turbo charger parts just to mention two others.

Dick.

I don't know which size or style tank your coach needs but I bought one for my coach at a local freightliner for about $100 three months ago. Perhaps you could call a few freightliner shops to see if they have one in stock or can find one for you. Mine is a 330 C-7 Cat engine.

My biggest fear of the tank leaking, is the toad behind it. Last trip out, I found antifreeze on the back of the coach. No apparent paint damage, but I don't want to push my luck! I will probably try and find one at some Freightliner dealer, but I will start trying to see what I can find to fit. There is a decent amount of room, so hopefully something will fit.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I checked out the Yahoo group that Gary suggested. I saw several conversions & part numbers. I went by Freightliner to discuss my options. I wound up going with only the cooling tank from Century, from their conversion. The cost was 183.00 for the tank alone, 700 for all parts! Their part # VLMT 3495 231.70. It will arrive on Monday, & I should be able to install by next weekend. I will take some pics for the modifications.

Thanks

Are you talking about the overflow tank or the tank that is pressurized on top of the radiator?
