Question Ah Nuts - Lug Nuts

Hi Everyone,

I've been unable to find any of the lug-bolt extensions that hold on the
rear wheel hubcaps (and the brackets for air-up extensions for the
inside wheels).

I'm sure that any of you which has an RV on a Freightline (and maybe
others) are using them, even if you haven't experienced it (hubcaps may be by Alcoa, not sure).

Question is: Where in the world can I get a couiple of them. It seems
most of the large Motorhome dealers dug in and covered themselves
up.

I called Freightliner and they didn't have a clue what I was talking
about. I would imagine it was an after market/conversion thing by the
RV maker.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, and think you might be able to help, I'll be happy to further detail how they work and add a photo.

Anyway, I hate to drive around with my white belly and nuts showing

A picture might be helpful. On my rig I have the stainless wheel liners and I have extensions for the air valves. I do not recall any extensions for the studs. The wheel lines have two two nuts with chrome covers that hold the cover on, the valve extender bracket fits under one of those. No extensions on the studs.

Sounds the same to me, Dave. If you have never changed tires or paid close attention to who was doing it, you might not know.

First you put on the inner and outter wheel with the lug nuts and torque'm down. The lug bolt still sticks out about an inch or so. You then screw another lug nut-looking nut on the lug bolt......one on each side. (This one has a threaded end which is much larger than even the lug bolts). You then put on the hub caps over the two threaded nuts. Then you put the valve exteners, which are mounted on a bracked, over the threaded nut. Then, you have to fasten those two threaded nuts down with a "thin nut" (1/8" maybe).
This is the nut that bolts down the hub caps and valve extensions. The chrome nut "covers" slides on to it and covers the "private parts". I do not have a picture of it because it was chiseled off.

Hopefully, you can put the pictures with my wordy attempt to 'splain it and it will make some sort of sense.

What you will see here all goes on AFTER the wheels are torqued down. First the nut you see screws on to the lug bolts. Then the wheel covers and the valve extensions. After that you tighten it all down with a thin nut (not shown) and finally attach the nut cover.

Clear as mud ?

I found them here Winnebago, Itasca, Era Motorhomes - Lichtsinn Motors Forest City, Iowa - RV Dealer for my Winnebago. Folks keep overtightening them way too much.

I understand the part you need. It is a brass nut that you screw onto the stud that holds the wheel cover. They are supplied my the MH manufacturer, not the chassis manufacturer. There is a special hand tool used to tighten the nut and it prevents overtightening.

Actually, mine isn't brass, but steel. The set really consists of three parts, the large nut that screws onto the lug bolt, a thin nut that screws onto it and a chrome cap that attaches to the thin nut. This is nuts !!!

I'll attach a pic. Large thin nut not shown. It was chiseled off.
