Axle Lube...Freightliner Detroit Axle

I'm getting frustrated by the Freightliner Service Manual.

I am trying to find the specific oils recommended for my Detroit Axle. It specifies a Mercedes Benz Specification 235.8...

Mobil Delvac 1 75w-90 or Mobilube 1 SHC 75w-90

Synthetics in order to get a 3yr, 250,000 mile service interval.

Why would they be so stringent on axle lubricant specifications???

This stuff isn't carried by any of our local parts stores...

call the 800 line and ask the advisor for the updated lists.
I use normal heavy duty axle lube oil from valvoline, i have to go look at the weight range. but the best source is fr help line. they can send you an email with all the specs and ranges.

You can use any brand as long as it matches the spec. of the mobal brand, most major brands do. They will mix to together,if it was me I would drain out old replace with syn.. will take about 5 gals

Thanks guys...

I finally found another post...and there was a mention of getting the Delvac 1 in 5 gallon pails. So I ordered a pail.

Yeah...I do want to go synthetic on the drive axle. It supposedly takes 23 pints to refill from a drain. Then 3yr, 250,000 miles.

My steer and tag hubs I just drained and filled with regular Valvoline 80w-90. It only drains about 7 oz from the hub each time...so I'll probably do this annually. That way I'm blending new oil in frequently, and checking for metal filings on the magnetic plug.

Just about thru with my two year service work.

and yes its synthetic,
i fashioned a long fill tube from 3/8 id clear tubing so i could loop it up and over the rear wheel and out so i could hang it on a ladder and put a funnel on the tube and poured the new stuff in slowly until i saw clean fluid coming out of the fill port. beat the heck out of trying to do it from under neath

According to the Mobil engineer I talked to a couple of weeks ago, my Detroit axle needs the Delvac 1 synthetic. It wasn't enough to meet the required spec to get just 75/90 oil. Apparently the Delvac oil has an additive that straight synthetic gear oil doesn't have.

After posting that I went to check the bottle I have (been using it in my pick up) and found no specs so I had also contacted Mobil and they said only use the Delvac 1 oil not the Mobil 1 LS gear oil.

https://www.thelubricantstore.com/mo...w90-5-gal-pail

Great price...and arrived very quickly!

I had found 1 gal previously on Amazon (paid too much)

But it all works out...this will do two axle services...

I Ordered Mobil Delvac 1 Synthetic 75w90 from Amazon. It was sold and shipped from Sim Supply, but came in a Grainger box and a packing list inside showing W W Grainger sold it to Sim supply and drop shipped to me. The price was good so at least tomorrow I can get it changed.

That's where I started...and it wouldn't let me put three gallons in the cart. I bought one gallon from the Amazon source (drop shipped from Grainger)...then found the 5 gallon version. It is nice to have a three year service interval now. And I guess this Delvac 1 is really good stuff...
