Well........ if DC decides to go with the DC engines and trans I think you will see a reduction in there costs due to volume, and, an increase in service centers due to volume sales.

Don, I must disagree with the BMW being superior to the Harley. I own both brands. I say this with over 40 yrs in the saddle being my barometer. The BMW is an exercize in extreme engineering, the Harley is an example of the time honored KISS system, and it works very well. Look around and let me know how many 20 to 40 yr old BMW's you see on the road, and how much they command in price. I have 2 oldie HOGs in my pen, a 77 and a 88 that are both running perfect and have never been apart. Now if BMW would bring back the tried and true air head boxer twin i might agree with you. IMHO, Good old American technology is, and always has been hard to beat.

I guess it's a good thing we don't do brand wars (especially off-topic ones) here on iRV2.com.

If you wonder where all those 20 to 40 year old BMWs are, you might check out some of the BMW motorcycle-related Internet forums as well as the classified ads in the BMWMOA Owner's News magazine - lots of R and K bikes there, and over 300,000 miles isn't unusual for a BMW motorcycle of this vintage.

LOL, ain't no thang Don.

Rusty a 300,000 mile beemer is the exception, I've seen um, I had an R/75 with 130K and an R90S with 90K. But those were air head boxers from the 70's, when BMW's were built tough.

Maybe CAT will convert one of their heavy equipment transmissions to MH use. That would be interesting. Any bets!!!!

You might be amazed how many high mileage K75s and K100s are still out on the road! These are commonplace in the BMWMOA classifieds.

OK, enough off-topic jabber. Suffice it to say that competition is generally a good thing, and having viable alternatives to Allison products could serve us all well. In the light truck classification, DaimlerChrysler has already introduced an Aisin 6-speed in combination with the Cummins 6.7L for the 2007 Dodge 3500 cab-and-chassis. This transmission looks heck for stout and is exhaust brake ready (as is the engine with its VGT) right off the showroom floor. Since DC owns Freightliner, who knows what else might be in the works????

For me....... I'll take a freightliner frame, a cummins engine, and a ZF gearbox.

Mike, you better check the source for your V-6 in your Saturn Vue! You may be in for a shock!!
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">From roadandtravel.com:

Women are the majority of buyers of Saturn's sport utility vehicle, the Vue.
For 2004, they're getting a surprising and improved package, a spirited ride that comes, interestingly enough, from a Honda V6 under the hood.

Better yet, even as this new V6 in the Vue boosts horsepower by 38 percent and torque by 24 percent compared with the previous engine, fuel economy remains unchanged. Add in a starting manufacturer's suggested retail price, including destination charge, for a V6-powered, 2004 Vue that's a competitive $22,500 or so, and it's no wonder the Vue is setting sales records. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Kinda like my "good ole American" truck that was assembled in Mexico by a German company.

You can't be too off base though if your heart is in the right place however the reality is something all, together different. Just about everything I have on my desk is made outside of the USA including my Logitech mouse, "Made in China"

I spoke with some Allison folks this week at the FMCA Convention and they are just about as mystified as the rest of us when it comes to conceptualizing this litigation.

One thing they did admit is that CAT is competing against the 3000 series and that's a pretty big market. It is doubtful that CAT will compete in the 1000/2000 GVW ranges. We did not speak about any other transmissions.

</div></BLOCKQUOTE>Which was precisely my point. My Dodge Ram, as I noted, was assembled in Mexico by a German company. My "Japanese" Acura 3.2TL-S was assembled in Marysville, Ohio. So, which (if either) is an "American" vehicle?

In making my purchasing decisions, I attempt to choose the best tool for the job. That's why I don't view foreign competition (ZF, Aisin, etc.) as a negative if it raises the competitive bar and forces all manufacturers to put better products into the marketplace. An example of this would be the Japanese auto manufacturers who have forced Detroit to pay attention to quality, engineering, fuel efficiency, etc. over the last several decades.

We'll see how it plays out, but in general anything that eliminates market monopolies tends to benefit the consumers.
