I have a 2001 Winnebago Journey D/L 36'. I need new tires. Has anyone had larger tires installed on their coach. My present tires are 235/80/22.5, with 7.5 rims. Is it possible to go with a larger tire and are there advantages or problems encountered by increasing the size of the tire?

I had inquired about the same issue and was advised that # 1 the larger tires might rub rub ( duels )and #2 the odometer would have to be recalculated.

My tires are the exact same size as yours. My tire guy said that the Michelins were very expensive as they don't have any competition for that size.

Hope that helps.

I changed the tires on my mh from 235s to xrv 255/80/22.5 with no ill effects the speedo is off very little and can be reset by freightliner if you fell you need it. The ride is much better and they are wearing better. The new tires also offer a larger weight cap. This was one of the best changes made to the coach.

embmac: You do have options for tire size, and the manufacturers specifications for each tire will give the details. Dual spacing is critical, if the dual tires "kiss" travelling, they will fail in short order. Another factor is clearance in the wheel well, hopefully someone with the same unit has tried the tire you decide on. Try to select a tire close to the specs for the original tire. Be sure the tire will fit your rim size. (Luckily all this is easier than it sounds....)

My MH came with Michelin XRV 235/80 R22.5 Load range G (max 4675# at 110psi) 10.3 inch spacing, 556 revolutions per mile

I went to Goodyear G670 tires, 275/70 R22.5 Load Range H (max 6940# at 125psi) I run the tires at 90psi based on the actual weight the tires carry. 548 revolutions per mile. Spacing required is 11.9 inches.
measure from center to center of the tread on the rear tires to get your chassis spacing. I still had plenty of clearance.
No change in the speedometer. 8 less revolutions per mile, about a 1.4% change or less than 1 mph difference at 60 mph.

The 255/80 tires would turn 541 per mile, just under a 2 mph difference.

Hope this helps

The other site had 2 replies. I dont understand the $2600 either. One guy said he went from 235/80 to a Goodyear G670/275/70/22.5 withno problem. This seems to be a good web site with lots of hits.

My 2004 Meridian (sister to the Journey) has 255/80/22.5 Michelin XRVs so surely you could at least go up to that size. I've considered maybe going to 275/70/22.5 Michelins as the 275/70 is about the same diameter as the 255/80 but about an inch wider so I am concerned about the clearance and dual spacing on the size. Also I've read the 70's may ride just a little stiffer than the 80's. Lots of if's and and's when it comes to changing tire sizes unless someone with the exact coach has done the exact change.

Good luck on your decision.

Thanks Wagonmaster 2! Do you happen to know your rim size? Mine are 7.5

I believe mine are 8.25. According to the Michelin RV tire guide the 235/80 approved rims are 6.75 & 7.50. And approved rims for the 255/80 are 6.75, 7.50, & 8.25 so it looks like your 7.50 rims would be fine for the 255/80 tires. Your 7.50 rims are also approved for 275/80 and 275/70 so it looks like you have lots of choice from the rims point, but maybe not from the clearance side.

Hope this had helped and not just confused the issue.

I believe the $2600 tire is the new Michelin wide single tire that replaces duals. It is probably not practical unless a coach comes equipped with that setup. Maybe the thing in the future!

Hooligan is right on the money. The G670 RV tires that he mentioned, were designed by Goodyear tobe direct upgrades to the XRV. The G670's are an inch wider, and still pass the test of minumum spacing with the stock aluminum wheels. Though they are a 275 tire, they have the same loaded radius, so your speedo is unaffected, and as Hooligan said, they are a load range H tire, so they will carry more weight at a lower tire pressure (much better safety margin).

I've had hem on my Horizon for several years, and have had no problems. I would buy them again.

My MH had the Michelin XRV 235/80 R22.5
After 2 zipper blow outs.

I went to Goodyear G670 tires, 275/70 R22.5
Odometer losses 1/10 mile every 10 miles driven. Or 1 mile for every 100 driven.
