Check Engine issue

This past weekend coming home. We going through the hills of north west Georgia and the check engine would come on. Once I found a place to pull over, I checked everything that I could and didn't find a problem. I got back in the coach, started it up and the light was gone. This happened a couple of times.

My question is does the computer on the 6.7L ISB Cummins hold any codes and besides going to a dealer am I able to look at them. I have not had any problems before when going through the smoky mountains towards Ashville NC.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Keith

I am making a big assumption that you have the in dash LBCU display.

With the parking brake set and the key on use the Joystick on the LBCU.
1) Press right and hold for five seconds
2) Scroll down to Diagnostics
3) Press right
4) Scroll down to Engine Diagnostics
5) Press right

Any stored active engine faults will be displayed after a few seconds.

Hope this works and helps.

I will give that a try and yes I have the joystick and big display. Didn't know you had to hold it for 5 seconds though. I will try that this weekend. I will report back what I found if it works LOL.

Check engine issue

My C7 cat started doing that on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Turned around and went home. (40 miles). Ran fine to home and later to the Cat dealer. It was a bad pressure sensor in the turbocharger. The computer thought it was too high and at one point told me to shut down.

I had this issue during my time this summer in Colorado. Found out the following from Freightliner 24/7:

You can retrieve your check engine or stop engine code(s) using your dash display, BUT only before you shut engine off.

When you get a light, pull over to safe area, make sure that none of the display items are highlighted

-Hold toggle to the right until setup menu appears, release
-toggle down to diagnostics, toggle right
-toggle down to engine diagnostics, toggle right
-screen will indicate retrieving codes, then indicate the number of active codes
-toggle right to retrieve first active code, write it down
-repeat to retrieve additional codes, if active

Call freightliner 24/7 and they will tell you what the codes mean.

If you shut off engine, the codes become inactive , and you can't retrieve them this way.

I have no idea was my only contribution tho.. lol sounds like others have way more knowledge and detail. But for all those diesel people, does the diesel set up not have a vacuum check on the check engine setup like a gasser that would detect a leak? curious now

...was it a true 'Check Engine' light(with those words?), or was it just an OUTLINE of an engine?

- the OUTLINE of an engine is an MIL ALERT from the emissions end of your DEF system, which is probably not something that will cause you any issues during your travels. This happened to me several months ago while coming over the mountains from Franklin NC to Hayesville NC. When I pulled the codes on the dash, and contacted Cummins, they said that it was probably a bad nOX sensor. After replacing the sensor a month later, at Cummins Crosspoint in FortWayne IN, under emissions warranty, everything has been fine since.

-now, if it's a true CHECK ENGINE yellow or red alert, that's a different story...

I have a 09 Winnebago Journey with the same engine. From my experience, check engine trouble codes are not recorded in the LBCU until the trouble is "solid". I purchased a diesel Scan Gauge and it records all codes generated. As an example, I had codes for an EGR issue that were posted on the SG but not recorded in the LBCU until the valve actually stuck. Knowing this, when I had Turbo codes on the SG 5 weeks before my warranty was to expire, took it to a Cummins dealer and they discovered with their diagnostic system that the Turbo was sticking and required replacement. Paid for the SG many times over. Accordingly, I would highly recommend the purchase of a ScanGauge-D, I'm sure it will pay for itself as it did for me and you will have a better understanding of all codes generated.
