Recently took delivery of new '06 Tiffin Allegro Bus 40DP on a Freightliner IFS chassis with a Cummins ISL-400 engine. Well pleased with Cummins/Allison powertrain performance, but increasing concerned with COLOR of engine oil.
Within the initial 2,000 miles of operation, the engine oil on the "stick" has turned BLACK! No evidence of excess oil useage, blowback, or engine malfunction, just soot-black colored oil.
This is my first experience with the Cummins ISL 400, or any diesel engine for that matter. Black-colored oil in my gas engines would be a signal for an immediate oil change. Should I be concerned that something is amiss in my brand new Cummins-powered DP?

Your concern over the oil duplicated my worry the first time I pulled the dipstick out of our diesel engine. Everyone assured me that on a diesel, the oil turns black very quickly due to soot from burning diesel.
Every oil change it's only a matter of a few hundred miles until the oil takes on the black appearance again.

Thanks Joe-K for the quick reassurance that black-colored oil in my new Cummins engine is normal. Just to be sure, I called the Cummins "Power Assist" (Owner's Customer Service) telephone line and asked the same question. They informed me that all diesel engine oils darken from the suspended solids formed during combustion. Some brands/weights of oil, like the Havoline 15W-40 oil put in the Cummins ISL 400 at the factory, "soot up" relatively quickly. "Black oil" is no concern UNLESS it is also changing consistency, i.e., forming "sludge." Just the same, I think I'll have my first oil/filter change done after six months of operation, regardless of the probable low mileage!

As stated...this is normal for diesel engines.
I was so concerned about it when I first got my 99 Dodge with the Cummins engine that I changed the oil and filter at 2500 miles. Did some research and discovered this is normal.
I still change my oil and filter every 5K on the truck for peace of mind.
I use the Fleetguard filters and Dello 400.
