Coolant capacity
OK
i am lost
Its time to change out the coolant and I can only find the capacity for the engine which is just around 3 gallons.
SO the 50k question is how much does the radiator hold?
i figure with the two 3/4" heater hoses running up front and back is about 3 gallons so we are up to 6.
I bought 5 at wallworld and will go get the remaining 5 this weekend..we bought all they had.
thanks

One way to determine the exact coolant capacity of your particular cooling system is to drain the old coolant into containers and see how much comes out.
BTW, often that's the only accurate way.

powerboatr, what engine does you motor home have in it, Cat or Cummins? I don't remember what year Cat quit making engines for motor homes. If it is a Cat you need to buy the coolant made for Cat engines. It has all the additives already in it that the Cat engine requires.

My cooling system holds about 9 gallons and only part of that drains. (about 1/2) Cummins ISB engine, Freightliner chassis. When I drain and flush, the last fill I use distilled water, then drain, and refill with about 5 gallons of an OAT coolant which usually tops off the system with about a 50/50 mix. I use Detroit Power cool plus which is full strength OAT coolant. (Same as Final Charge except that local Final Charge is usually only 50% strength which gives a weak mixture with the water that remained in the system)
Good article here on coolant change. http://beamalarm.com/Documents/coola...procedure.html

Just what coolant did you buy @ Walmart? You need a fully formulated HD diesel coolant not some Prestone auto stuff.

final charge coolant
our wall worlds carry more and more heavy engine stuff, I think because we are so rural with lots of cows and heavy trucks

You need to find out how much total coolant the system holds, then buy half that amount of UNMIXED coolant, not the premix. Because you can't drain the whole system you need to rinse the system out a couple times with water, then put half the total capacity in of the coolant, then finish with distilled water.

Mr D beat me to the pinch. Most Walmarts only carry the premix. It is almost impossible to drain the whole system. You need to flush with tap water and then with distilled water.

i got the 12 gallons of distilled to run through after flushing,
still waiting on the remainder of coolant to arrive at wally world
3 of which are non dilluted....
got bucket waiting to catch as much as i can to double check the math...
it will probably rain now this weekend
thanks
got a few hoses to replace and some new hose clamps as well
my lower cross over hose has taken a beating on the 90 elbow
so a new silicone one is waiting to go on

If your system takes 12 gallons (which ours does) you need 6 gallons of non-diluted coolant and 4 or 5 distilled water. I just did the first flush today and was surprised about how much old coolant was still left even after draining once. I had already drained the coolant from the low point petcock on the rear radiator and opened the front port in the heater hose (I installed it years ago when I did the first coolant change). Started the engine and let it run till the temp got up over 150°. Didn't think that was enough to open the thermostat but it must have been as the radiator was getting warm. Shut it down and drained it again. In fact there was enough old coolant that I'm going to flush it with tap water one more time.
I'll probably dilute the first 3 or 4 gallons of coolant (with distilled water) then add the other 2 or 3 straight and top with more distilled water.
BTW, I had to run the engine at high idle for close to an hour to get the temp to 150°

Recommend start with the concentrated,-- The 1st change I did, figured 9 gallon system, put in 3 of premix, added 1 1/2 gallons of concentrate and the radiator was full.... and the mixture was weak...apparently about half the water remains in the system even with the lower hose off. Although You may get a better drain with the front port open....
My 2nd change I added all concentrate and it came out at 50/50...

The best way is to fill with 6 gal of the non diluted coolant then top with distilled water. This will give you a 50-50 mix.

Nope, don't want to start with the concentrate since I don't want a big "slug" of it in first although in a few hundred miles it won't matter anyway.

I would say it is likely well mixed in under 20 miles. My DP only takes 5 to come to operating temp on the motor.
