Curious to know how many Freightliner owners have had to replace the fan motor, a component of the steering pump system? Just had mine done on my 2005 motor home to the tune of $2100, ouch and $700. labor fee to chase down a $12.00 part in the MMAD system which controls a multidude of components including the dash board gauges and most importantly the Jake Brake which failed while going down the Sierra Nevada Mts from 7000 feet to sea level.

Grimesy.....re your question, I will share my recent experiences.

I had the fan motor on my 2003 Fleetwood Revolution/Freightliner chasis replaced this past July at 36,500 miles...cost around $1,950. The pump only comes as new; cost is about $1,100. It is a big job to replace the thing....had mine done by our local F/liner dealership. In addition, the steering had a very mushy feel to it at normal operating temperatures, so I had them check it out at the same time. The pump failed the hot pressure test....so another $1,600 for that repair, which included a new p/s pump. (The improvement in steering response, feel, etc., however, was remarkable.) Both the fan motor for my side-mounted radiator and the p/steering system work within the same hydraulic system/reservoir on my coach.

As the second owner of this coach (purchased March of this year), my initial focus was getting a lot of the required maintenance up to speed. Since I bought the coach "right", I figured that some significant dollars might be required to do this. The previous owner was, shall we say, a bit lax. In addition, the coach had been in mothballs for about 2 years.

My F/liner Maintenance Manual states that the fluid and the filter within this hydraulic system was to be changed at the first 6 months/6,000 miles and again at every 24 months/24,000 miles after that. Neither had been done on my coach. In addition, the old adage of "When they sit, they rot!" also comes in to play here. I know from experience with my hot rods and old cars that internal seals on brake systems and other hydraulic systems absolutely hate "sitting around". That is likely what happened here. Lousy maintenance sure didn't help either.

Thank God I bought the coach "right", but that "beak even point" got a lot closer in July!! (Oh the joys of owning a DP!) Despite the above, I still love the Revolution. Got pretty much everything up to speed now...but I'm runnin' out of candles!! By the way, I do not wish to discuss now - or at ANY time in the future - my experience with the MMAD system or Jake Brakes....if you get my drift! Sorry to hear of your experience with those bad guys. Hope you're out of the woods there....

Hope any of this helps....take care.

I appreciate your response, like you said lots of maintenance with a DP, although I do love mine next goaround I think it will be back to gas..Now it is time for a brake job and examine a leaky exhaust system. Whatever happened to the days of quality workmanship and we stand behind our product?

Don, I agree with you 120% on the "back to gas" from my first diesel, and surely wonder what happened to "we stand behind our product". I think "we" do stand behind our products, but so very far behind no one can find us to blame our poor workmanship on us.
