As a member of the Freightliner Chassis Owner’s Club, I recently read some valuable information on the lubrication of a Freightliner brake component.

Let me categorically state that I am no mechanic or brake expert. I am merely passing information along that I learned as an FCOC member.

Some people have complained about a clunking sound that accompanies a pull to one side, when applying the brakes on their Freightliner chassis motorhome. One of the causes could be the improper lubrication of the brake’s S-Cam mechanism. A fellow FCOC member did some research and wrote up a very informative article on why this occurs, and how to address/prevent it.

Here is a link to that article.

Thanks for the timely (for me) posting. My right front wheel is making the classic clunk that indicates the S cam needs cleaning and lube.

My question is: After removing the lug nuts and wheel, is there anything else to remove before the brake drum will come off? I've removed a lot of wheels from auto's, but never one with oil bath lube to the bearings. Before I attempt this repair, a little additional info from someone who has done this before will be helpful.
Thanks

Fred

OK...disregard my question. I've since learned from another forum that after wheel removal, the brake drum will slide off leaving the oil filled hub in place.
Thanks....Fred

I would suggest all FL chassis owners check in to becoming members of the FCOC group.

Thanks Graig for the brake, S-cam info. I have the same clunking noise from my drivers side front brake when I make a hard brake. My brakes don't seem to be as good as they used to be. I have 25,000 mi on my 2005 Revolution motorhome. Oh well, I need something to keep me busy after retirement.

Just a follow up. My coach has had the classic clunk since 2004, and I've had a maintenance shop look for it at least twice with no joy. After Christmas, I pulled the Front wheels and greased the S cam and rollers. The noise is gone. Thanks again for posting this article about the S cam.
