Freightliner Cruise Control Issues
We have a 1997 Itasca Sun Cruiser on a freightliner chassis. I started out with an interment problem, The cruise would just drop out unexpectly. Several shops attempted to repair but failed. Now it does not work at all. Any suggestions on where to start the trouble shooting? I had found a site on the internet that had a troubleshooting sequence but I have lost the site. ??

kirkpal1;
Have you tried Freightliner 800-FTL-Help? They are super to work with and have helped me several times.

kirkpal1, I had a similar issue with my Freightliner, intermittant cruise operation in wet conditions. After a few weeks of frustration, I tracked the problem to corrosion on the brake light switches, when the corrosion got wet it tracked enough power to confuse the ECM into shutting down the cruise. Cure was to clean the switches, and coat them with non-conductive grease. Good luck.

KIRKPAL1,
I have had the same problem that you speak of. The solution upon the advice of a Freightliner service person was to pull the CRUISE CONTROL STALK from the steering column and clean the contacts inside the control stalk. Radio Shack sells electrical contact cleaner which when squirted into the stalk at both the end and where the control slide is should held clean the contacts. Took a bit of time to cycle the switches to be sure they were getting cleaned. Works ok now.

Chkirkpal1,
the brake light switch should be under the dash located next to the brake pedal arm. Pushing the pedal down closes the electrical circuit for the brake lights. Check it, but I still think you should look at the CRUISE CONTROL STALK. Your problem sounds just like what was occurring on our coach.

Attached to the brake pedal arm , is the location for many gas powered M/H with hydraulic brakes. Air brake equiped M/H's the switches (2) are on the foot valve, under the floor, one switch for each of the front/rear, air circuits. Easiest access was with the gen set pulled out, and sit up between the frame rails. If you have air brakes and want to see a picture of what to look for , re-post and I'll direct you to a post with the picture in it.

cruise issues, trouble shooting
Used contact cleaner as suggested, did not resolve issue. Looked for brake switch but did not find. My rig is a diesel with air brakes. The gen set is side located so hopefully the switch is accessiable. a picture would be nice, thanks.

kirkpal1, go to Freightliner Chassis forums , page 4, look for a post by, badtip; should I hook this up; the picture he posted should be the same as your unit. Directly below the brake pedal. Red wires are the power, and white are the load. As stated the 2 switches are, 1 each for the front/rear brakes. In the picture the switches have spray foam insulation on them, my problem was , road salt passing a low voltage when wet, between the terminals. Cleaning, and coating the switches with a non-conductive grease, curred my problem.
Good luck.

If its like my 2000 Freightliner, the two brake switches are mounted on the bottom side of the air brake tredle. You have to get under the coach to see them. When you're under there, it's a long stretch up to get your hand on the switches.

Cruise Control problem resolved
thanks for all the suggestions and ideas. I spent several hours of my time running all these leads down to no luck. Over the pst 6 months I have paid out almost $00 dollars to three different shops for trouble shooting time and still no chruise. I finally took the unit to Motor Homes of Texas. This is a shop who specializes in Foretravel service, I had used these guys when I had owned a Foretravel coach.
They resolved my issue with two hours of trouble shooting. The King Cruise unit was fried. Bought a new King Cruise unit, installed and I once again have a cruise control.
Thanks again for all of your suggestions.
