Freightliner recall #FL-509
IFS / ZF-8018 steering gear.

Tried to set up a service appointment at Freightliner and they said they couldn't do anything until after the 24th of Sept.

Does anyone know why we have to wait till that date if the recall has already been issued? Seems like it could be a catastrophic failure of the steering on the coach....heck, I don't even want to take the chance of driving the 160 miles to the shop.....does anyone else know anything about the recall?

They told us that the recall only affects certain units and nothing can be done until the letters are sent out. If we do not get a letter then after the 24th we can call with our vin number and double check.

Several reasons for the delay - they have to figure out exactly which units need replacement and obtain improved replacement parts from ZF to do the job. You can expect that it will take some time to get the many hundreds (thousands?) of replacement steering gears needed.

I called Freightliner this morning. My unit is not on the recall list.
