Freightliner vs Spartan

I have a 2010 Phaeton 42QBH Tag on a Freightliner chassis.. People tell me they have the same coach on a Spartan and its a better chassis. Then they tell me they installed a safe-steer to eliminate road wander and have trouble in the wind.... And they get 5 mpg...

I just listen . I drive all over the west in the mountains, passed 18 wheelers and cross winds that would have really got my attention when I had a smaller RV. I don't have a safe steer and was impressed by the freightliners handling. I also get 7 - 7.5 mpg pulling a Jeep Rubicon. But that has more to do with the transmission than chassis. Yeah Spartan makes good Fire Engine chassis but I'm using it on an RV.

Millions of Freightliner Trucks fill the highways. I'll bet there are more Freightliner experienced mechanics around too.

I wanted a Freightliner chassis as my first choice and I think it was the right choice.

From a driving standpoint I don't think many people can tell the difference now. It used to be that most FL chassis were beam axle but not the new ones.

Both are very good products. I've never experienced any of the issues you mention in my three plus years with a Spartan MM chassis. It is stock with the original Bilstein shocks, no safety steer and no problems with strong cross winds plus I average 7.1 to 7.4 fully loaded pulling a 4 thousand lb Ford Edge. FWIW I've owned both brands. Further note, Entegra, and Newmar Essex and King Aire use Spartan exclusively.

Essex has an optional Freightliner.

King Aire has been the only one using the K3GT. Had me wondering if Spartan would keep it for such a small market. But now with Foretravel using the K3GT under the Realm, it may have more staying power.

I have a 40' unit with no tag axle on the Freightliner chassis. I have no problem with semi's passing, wondering etc. Once in a great while if there's 30 + mph cross winds she'll get a little squirrely, but basically it's a heavy duty chassis built by a truck company, and I don't expect it to drive like a car, it's a heavy vehicle.

FL works fine for me and have no experience with Spartan.

It's the old Ford vs. Chevy argument. I may have a preference on the chassis but the bread box dictates the purchase.
