Call Freightliner @ 1-800-FTL-HELP, provide them your VIN # and they will tell you specifically for your engine. There were different configurations for the ISB engines thru these years, where there may be both a primary and a secondary fuel filter on the engine along with the fuel/water separator.

My '00 ISB only had 1 fuel filter and 1 fuel/water separator.

I called FL, and they said I think you only have one FS.

gwj,

The Freightliner Owners club looked into this question and were told:
from 1/2000 thru 12/2003 Freightliner only installed one fuel filter on all chassis.
prior to 2000 and after 2003, they used two filters, a primary fuel/water seperator (10 or 30 micron) and a secondary (engine mounted) 2 micron fuel filter. Those dates are FCCC chassis assembly dates, not necesarily the same as coach model years.

Thanks, Jim. All I see is a fuel/water seperator at the rear of the coach, by the radiator.

My '00 Journey FL chassis was built 10/5/99, and it had 2 fuel filters installed (1 fuel/water separator, and 1 filter underneath at the engine). When I was at Camp Freightliner in 2006 I showed it to Mike Cody and he never saw the 2-filter systems on the ISB, but he looked it up in FL's Bill of Materials system, and sure enough, it was there for my chassis VIN.

So again, if you provide your VIN to FL, they can verify your system.

The information provided by JRP is consistent with my prior coach.

I have a January 2004 build FL chassis with a 2003 Cummins ISL engine and only one filter/separator/

I'm having sort of the same problems. I have a 2004 Cat C-7 on FL chassis mfg. in Dec 2003. It has one filter at the engine (no problem there) and one fuel/water separator at the rear of the coach. The original separator part no. ended with FRT03, found out it was a 2 micron and should be a 10 micron. First of the year the FCOC web page indicated it should be FRT01 but now say that is a 30 micron filter. When I access the Alliance web page it doesn't even recognize the FRT03 or FRT01 and all the FCOC site shows now is FL01 or FL02. I'm so confused I don't know which I'm supposed to be using. Plan on calling FL at Gaffney after New Years but from what I'm reading I may not get much help. I'm new to the diesel field and have never seen any mechanical device that had so much wishy washy info for maintenance items as there is out there on diesels. Between Cat, FL, and Alliance, no one seems to agree on anything. Hope you get your question answered to your satisfaction.

According to the FCOC web site the primary fuel filter located at the engine is a 2 micron filter, and the fuel-water separator should be a 30 micron filter.

The website verifies the confusion on all the part numbers.

On the CAT website here there is reference to specific part numbers for both filters on the C7 engine (at the bottom of page 2).

The FCOC web page just further confuses the issue with the primary filter. At the top it says the primary should be either 10 or 30 micron but shows no numbers for the 10 micron in the chart. Then at the bottom of the page it states "confusion further reigns at FL since Allliance has changed its parts numbers again. The FRT for 2004 has been changed to FLO for 2005/2006. " Does that mean the 2004 uses the same as the next 2 years or there is a different filter for 2004 than is used for 2005/2006. And the Alliance web page isn't much clearer. I sure hope a phone call to Gaffney after the holidays will help but I'm beginning to wonder if they know any more than we do. Thanks for the response.

wagonmaster, agreed regarding the confusion on the fuel filters. What I have consistently read on the internet (for at least CAT C7 engines) is that the primary fuel filter must filter @ 2 micron filtration, and the secondary fuel-water separator must filter at 30 microns.

I understand the primary needing to be what it is, but I wouldn't think that the secondary really matters to the engine. I bought a Racor secondary filter a few days ago at the local Peterbilt shop and asked the same question. They didn't think it really mattered either. How fast do you want to clog the primary I guess..

I'm still curious about priming these on the C-7. Is there a bypass that clears the air, or do I have a hidden pump on the top of the engine?
