I looked at the pricing for the Flying J in Dallas on 2/28 and it was listed at $3.519. When I physically stopped yesterday, it had risen to $3.559. It appears to be increasing about $.04 ever 3-4 days here.

Regular gas remains around $2.98 here. The diesel differential will soon be $.60 a gallon. That just boggles my mind.

What is going on with diesel prices in the states? It used to be less than gas. In Eurpose, diesel is always much less than gas (I lived in Dresden from 2004-2006). Isn't diesel easier to refine than gas? This doesn't compute.

1. Diesel in Europe is taxed at a lower rate than gasoline as Europe (for a number of reasons) encourages a shift to diesel vehicles. In the U.S., diesel is taxed more heavily than gasoline, the rationale being that diesel is used primarily in heavier vehicles that generate more requirements for highway repairs and maintenance.

2. ULSD costs more to refine than LSD and its predecessor diesel fuels.

3. Especially during winter, demand for diesel and the crude oil fractions used to refine it is higher than the demand for gasoline. For example, winter is also when heating oil demand is high.

During winter, part of the diesel refining capacity goes to heating oil, which drives up demand. I have also heard that China is importing as much diesel as they can get.
