I have a 2006 Journey with a cat 350. It has a engine heater for cold weather starting. My question is: How does the heater work? (What is it heating?). Is there any problem turning it on for long periods? (Such as all night long).
Thanks for the info.

The block heater heats the engine coolant. There is a heating element that in installed in the coolant passage. You can leave it on all night and it will not hurt a thing. You could leave it on longer if you want. All its doing is keeping the engine warm via the engine cooling system. I have a Dodge Cummins that I drive everyday and also we use it to pull our rv..and I plug it in at night so that its nice and warm the next morning...

Rick,
Thanks for the info, I like the idea of leaving it on at night when you plan to start the next day in cold weather.
