headlights going off and on

Howdy, I have a problem with my headlights. I turn them on, after a little bit they will start flickering on and off, both high beam and low beam. The clearance, tail, and dash lights stay steady. The flickering is too quick to be a breaker and my coach is older and does not have breakers, in fact I have found fuses and relays in several locations, but most are in the dash area. I have changed the headlight switch. I am beginning to think I may have something loose in the steering column (my wife says only thing loose is in my head). My chassis is freightliner. I asked this question under the Alegro owners forum, but hoping to get additional help here.

I had issues, with my 99 F/L with an overloaded head light switch.
The mid 70's GM headlight switch used in my unit has an internal self re-setting circuit breaker, and can be over loaded with aftermarket , high-output bulbs, or as was my problem a sticking relay( F/L) that caused; due to a Newmar wiring problem ; all lights , high & low beam to stay on at the same time. The headlight switch, C/B is sized for a specific draw, and when overloaded will act , exactly as you describe.

The park lights are powered & fused separately , so don't flash.

The solution is to add an external C/B and relay for the main headlight power draw, after you check the wiring for shorts.

EDIT: Steve, if you could add your year and chassis info to your signature line, it will help you get answers to questions, a lot of members won't look for the info in your profile and won't bother to answer if they don't see it.

thank you for your thoughts, I will add the extra info to my signature.... I am thinking about adding a separate circuit for headlights as I already did this for my wipers....

If you're not already a member; consider joining Access Freightliner, for wiring and parts info for your coach.
The wiring diagrams & schematics that I downloaded from the site, have helped me many times.

Joining Access Freightliner takes a while , but very worthwhile.
Thanks for changing your signature line.

I have rewired all my cars/trucks/MH to use only minimal amps through the headlight switch and/or the pewny OEM wiring

I take and use the 12v+ at the headlight plug to activate a relay, the have the relay hooked to the battery and a breaker, and run #10 wire with high amp headlight plugs. There is no voltage drop using this method and will solve the problem with older vehicles that did not use relays to power the headlights
