ISB Starting problem - need help!

2001 Winnebago Journey cumins ISB engine fails to start after parked for a few days. I have 3 lift pumps replaced and 2 VP44 pump that is mounted on the engine. The sequence of operation the lift pump runs for 15 sec and drops out with a check the engine. I have invested $$. This problem has not corrected.

I moved the motor home to the Freightliner as the local cumins repair business had the Motor Home since October of 2010. They sent me off with thought that the fuel tank or fuel line was at fault after 3 years.

I am struggling with this because I do not trust the operation of the vehicle. In Rual Wyoming you could be stranded for some time.

I replaced the first lift pump, when I removed the old lift pump, which was not faulty, there was no diesel in the line. I know now that the lift pump could not pump it enough in 15 seconds to keep the engine going to a fault.

What can I do with this situation. The local freightliner had to wait for parameters for this vehicle. The wait was 3 weeks and several calls.

While the waiting for repair at the Cumins location a employee hit the Motor Home, they gave me a quick fix, which included a check the motor alarm with the idea it was tank and line.

Help! I wil not mention of the Cumins repair shop. I still have to have them use their computer to clear the alarm.

Anyone have any knowledge of this problem.

I have a similar problem. If you check my thread, Elecrrical Problem, you will find that my ECM fuses and holder were badly corroded. I still do not have a solution, the ISB will turn over but will not start. The only thing you do is work backwards until you find fuel flowing. Where is your lift pump located on the engine? is it electric or mechanical? My coach is a 2001 Sportscoach and is probably on the same Freightliner chassis. DACOTAH

I'm not sure wheither the '01 ISB used the fuel strainer or not. Check for it in the frame above the rear, passenger side tires. I had an ongoing problem with our '04 ISB. Replacing the fuel strainer fixed the problem.
Good Luck, Indiana Journey

JJJJorge, as I have been researching my similar problem, I think Indiana Journey may have your answer. The filter put on some of these Freighliners frame rails is often missed durring filter changes, there are a total of 3 filters for this application. On some coaches it is located on the left frame rail just behind the engine near the transmission, on others it is inside a cushion clip on the lower left side of the engine. The part number is RAI025RAC10 and is available through Freightliner or Napa Auto. It is 4.8" long and should be replaced every 6 months or 15000. miles I have ordered mine through Napa and have not found the location yet, but will spend Monday afternoon looking for this hidden filter. Have your shop look for it and report your findings to us. DACOTAH

Dacotah,
Get ready to get dirty and be a contortionist, your strainer is in the same area as mine- inside the passenger side frame rail, just ahead of the rear axle. I don't know who suggested putting it there but they should have to change one. They would undoubtedly change the location.
Good Luck, Indiana Journey

Several years ago my ISB 5.9 in my Dodge CTD truck became hard to start. I finally located the problem, the flexible fuel lines from the frame to the lift pump had deteriorated inside and virtually blocked fuel flow. They looked fine on the outside. This issue also causes lift pump failure, and if not remedied, causes injection pump failure.

I am really confused reading this thread as I have owned two ISB (99/06) and on both they only had two fuel filters. The water separator and that !@#$%^ rail filter located on the passenger side behind the rear wheels. Now, someone mentioned there are three? Where is the third one?

If you post the last the last 7 digits of your vin, I will be happy to pull up the fuel filter for your MH. It will have to be a Freightliner for me to do this. I will try & post the info on this tread, or I would be glad to email it to you. Freightliner has a 24 hour help line in case you don't know. It is 800-345-4357.

Hope this helps!

Dirtbuster, thanks for the help. My Vin is CG53540. The cummins ISB is a 1999, The Freightliner chassis is a 2000, and the Sportscoach is a 2001. Knowing whether the third filter is on this chassis would be a great help. Thanks, DACOTAH

Its sounds like you are losing the prime of the system after the motorhome sits. I know when we change our filters on our cummins mtr it takes quite awhile to get all the air our of the system so that motorhome will start. Maybe one of your filters isn't sealing or you have a line with a hole in it that lets the system blead back. I have a Freightliner Truck as well with a Detroit 500 and had an issue a fews years ago, if it sat for a day it wouldnt start again. I could cheat to get it started if I pressurized the fuel tank. On the back of the Detroit heads there is a pressure regulator. The fuel line from head to regulator had worn through and was letting the system lose its prime.

Monday afternoon I changed the two fuel filters; the one large one on the frame next to the motor and the one on the motor. According to Freightliner, our coach does not have the third frame rail filter; I looked for it anyway and it is not on this coach. When I tried to reprime the system, the sequence from the manual did not work. The lift pump would only run for about 4 seconds and stop rather than the 30 seconds the manual stated. After many 4 second primes, it finally started but the tach was still jumping and the check engine light was on. Tuesday morning I drove to the Cummins shop and they put the computer on the ISB and the engine speed sensor was faulty. $320.00 later after a road test everything is fine. The speed sensor feeds info to the ECM and when it fails the ECM does not always allow the motor to start. It aso controls the 30 second prime on the lift pump. I hope this info can help others; it has been a frustrating 3 weeks of searching to find the problem. DACOTAH

Glad you got it fixed. I have a check engine light that comes on sometimes once during a days drive.

It has been in the fault code of speed sensor also in my VMSpc. But they are 3 different speed sensors. And mine hasn't affected the running of the ISB. It has done this for over 3-4 years now with no change.
