Keys

I called my local Freightliner shop and inquired about getting spare keys cut. They told they didn't do keys and to go to a locksmith or Home Depot.

Make sense? Not to me!

Home Depot actually had a blank that was very close but just a bit short.

Any thoughts where to get spares cut?

Keys....

I had the same problem after I got my (used) MH.
I happened to be in the Denver CO area. Contacted the local Camping World thinking they would solve the problem. No luck.
BUT: They did know the answer, provided me with the name of a local "Locksmith" that stocks RV keys. Quick trip to his shop and I was set. I picked up spares just in case......
BOTTOM Line: Contact a local RV shop, see if they can make the keys.
If not ask who they would suggest, if they don't have a answer, try another RV shop. If all else fails, start calling "Locksmiths" out of the yellow pages.
A good locksmith can make a (low tech) key from a photo. I did it off eBay for my 2001 F-250......
Problems with the MH is finding a place that has the correct blanks.
After multiple trips to Home Depot I gave up and paid a professional the extra $$ to solve the problem w/o any more running about town.

We only got one working ignition key with the Magna. There were others that looked the same but the blank was opposite of what it should have been. Went to a local locksmith and had more made. Since I wanted spares of others it cost me $45 for 15 keys. Kind of shocked me but I didn't ask the cost before ordering so no one to blame but myself!

My ignition key is very simple looking - I went to my local hardware store and had some duplicates for the ignition and the main entrance door. I didn't have a key to open the bay doors. I could only lock and unlock them using the electronic Fob. I asked the hardware store to take the lock core from one of the bay doors. He did and made me a key. Now, if something happens to my electronic Fob, I can use the key to unlock the bay doors. I also discovered that the key can only be used to unlock the doors, but not to lock them.

After I had the key made for my bay doors, I tried to reprogram the combination lock on my entry door. Now my electronic Fob doesn't seem to lock and unlock the bay doors when I try to lock the front door, like it used to. It looks like I would need to look at the instructions and reprogram it.

Mr-D had 15 spare keys made...seem like a lot? I think I've got him beat but don't want to count them all now.

For all you people reading this thread that don't have 15 spare keys...get thee to the locksmith, especially if you have remote fobs to electronic locks that WILL go bad some day.

Put a couple spare keys in a zip lock bag and duct tape them to your frame somewhere. Little magnetic boxes rust and fall off.

I'm going to find a local locksmith shop and see if they have blanks and make copies.

I appreciate the support.

Just because one Freightliner dealer doesn't want to bother with keys doesn't mean none of them do. And I suspect you could get key blanks from the factory parts dept (call 1-800FTL-HELP) and have any local key shop cut them. My local hardware store makes keys, but doesn't attempt to stock every conceivable style of blank. If I bring in the blank, they will cut it for me.

I don't know if it uses the same style blank as a Freightliner truck, but those are readily available online, e.g. Ebay, Amazon, Ilco locks, mysecurity.com, etc.

Looking at my ignition keys, they are GM keys, so I'm assuming that the ignition switch on my National Tradewinds is a GM product. The door key for the lower lock is a blank headed key and you can get those from your RV dealer if you give him the number off the door lock. I don't know what the problem with the compartment keys are as there are only a few different keys for them and almost anyone can open anyone elses compartments.

You might try these folks. They had blanks for my Blue Bird. Cheap. $4.95 each with free shipping.

We were able to get the keys made at the local locksmith. They said they have every conceivable RV key.

Thanks for your input.

My Motor home the Ignition key is a common automotive key blank.

But google Fred's lock service Detroit.

now.. Look for the same kind of store near you

If you do not want to waste time googling (I got paid 9 cents to look this up)

Locks, Fred's Key Shop Detroit, MI Home

Obviously less you are in/near Detroit this shop is not the one to go to (I mean it's 1,000 miles from where I am just now) but this is the TYPE of shop you need to look for.

Any lock and key shop can do it...not Wal Mart, Sears, Lowes, Home Depot, etc.
